Chapter 55 - The Matriarch's End

As the zip-ties were sliced from my wrists, I collapsed forward onto my knees, my hands raw and swollen. I didn't care about the pain. I scrambled across the wet concrete, throwing my arms around Ethan, pulling Leo and Maya into our embrace as the mercenaries stripped the tape from their faces.
"Mommy... Mommy, I was so scared," Maya sobbed, burying her face into my collarbone.
"I've got you, baby. I've got you," I whispered frantically, kissing the top of her head while Ethan pulled Leo tight against his chest.
Ethan leaned his forehead against mine, his breath ragged, his dark hair matted with sweat. "Claire, listen to me," he whispered, barely moving his lips, his voice pitched so low only I could hear beneath the drone of the generators. "The vault isn't just an asset cache. I reviewed the original blueprints when I was building the foundation’s surveillance files. It’s an old NATO cold-storage redoubt. It has an internal decompression and flooding safeguard."
My eyes met his. The tactical soldier I had married six years ago was back, the grief and fear suppressed behind a wall of cold, analytical survival.
"If the internal atmospheric seal is breached from the primary terminal," Ethan whispered, "the blast doors lock down from the outside and vent the chamber with halogen gas within ninety seconds. There's an auxiliary escape shaft behind the maintenance vent in Sector Four."
Before I could answer, the heavy double doors at the top of the ramp slammed open.
Two mercenaries escorted an elderly woman down the ramp.
Victoria Vance looked like a ghost that had wandered into daylight. Her immaculately styled silver hair was disheveled, her expensive cashmere coat stained with engine soot, her frail frame trembling under the weight of catastrophic defeat.
She saw me, then she saw Ethan and the children, and her eyes widened in horrified realization.
"Arthur..." Victoria stammered, leaning heavily on her gold-handled cane as she approached her eldest grandson. "Arthur, what is this? Why are they here? You told me your extraction team had chartered a seaplane for Geneva!"
Arthur didn't even turn around to look at her. He kept his attention focused on the tactical tablet in his hands. "Plans change, Grandmother."

"You insolent boy!" Victoria’s voice cracked with old, familiar venom, though it was hollow now, devoid of the power she once wielded. "I pulled you out of that burning wreckage in the Black Sea! I spent forty million dollars of foundation money to forge your death certificate and buy your new identity! You exist because I willed it!"
Arthur turned slowly. In one fluid, terrifying motion, his hand snapped out, catching Victoria by the throat.
