Chapter 39 - The Black Cipher

That evening, the storm over Boston cleared, leaving behind a crisp, black winter sky.

Marcus walked into the private ward, his overcoat damp with melted snow. He didn't look triumphant. His brow was furrowed, his expression dark and guarded. He carried a secure, air-gapped laptop with a red Department of Homeland Security seal across the hinge.

Ethan looked up from his hospital bed, setting down a cup of tea. "What did the decrypted drive show, Marcus?"

Marcus pulled up a chair between Ethan and me, angling the screen so only we could see. "The financial trail we recovered from Arthur's island server goes much deeper than the Sterling family’s debts. Ethan’s bio-encryption research wasn't being bought by the Aegis Directorate for pharmaceutical patenting."

"Then what was it?" I asked, a knot of dread tightening in my stomach.

"It’s an offensive digital kill-switch," Marcus explained, his finger tapping the screen, bringing up lines of glowing green code intertwined with military supply-chain registries. "Ethan designed a biological authentication system that secured critical life-support networks and automated pharmaceutical distribution across NATO military hospitals. Arthur and the Directorate altered the root code. With Ethan's master key, they could remotely corrupt insulin supplies, vaccines, and surgical anesthetics across every Allied military base on Earth."

Ethan closed his eyes, his knuckles whitening as he gripped the hospital bedrail. "A biological blackout. They could paralyze an entire military infrastructure in four hours without firing a single bullet."

"And who within our government was facilitating the transport?" I asked, staring at the complex web of shell companies on the display.

Marcus looked up, his eyes locking onto mine with chilling intensity.

"The indictments Judge Miller unsealed three days ago were supposed to be kept strictly under seal until the federal raid was completed," Marcus said quietly. "Someone leaked the warrant manifests three hours before the marshals kicked in Evelyn’s door."

"Who?"

"Assistant Director Thomas Hall," Marcus replied. "The head of the Federal Marshals' Special Operations Group in New England. The man who personally authorized our extraction team to Heron Island."

A cold draft seemed to sweep through the sterile hospital room.

"Hall wasn't helping us rescue Ethan," I realized, blood draining from my face. "He authorized the Coast Guard cutter so we would pull Ethan out of Arthur's fortified bunker... into the open."

"And Arthur’s island getting hit by that missile?" Ethan whispered. "That wasn't to kill Arthur. That was to destroy the server that proved Hall was on the Directorate’s payroll."

Suddenly, the fluorescent lights overhead flickered violently.

Once. Twice.

Then the entire hospital floor plunged into pitch-black darkness.
