Chapter 53 - The Master of the Ruins

Arthur pulled a sleek titanium drive from his pocket, tossing it lightly in the air before catching it with practiced ease.

"The public ledgers you released wiped out eighty percent of our domestic holdings," Arthur explained, his tone conversational, as if he were discussing quarterly earnings over Sunday brunch. "The federal seizures have already frozen the trust funds, the real estate portfolios, the shell corporations in Delaware. Eleanor's luxury townhouse in Manhattan was raided thirty minutes ago. She was hauled out in front of the paparazzi wearing silk pajamas and screaming obscenities."

A cold flicker of satisfaction flared in my chest, but it was instantly snuffed out by the ice in Arthur's eyes.

"What they didn't find—what you couldn't find, Claire—was the Genesis Vault," Arthur whispered. "The private, untraceable liquidity pool Father established forty years ago. Two point four billion dollars in gold bullion, bearer bonds, and unmonitored cold cryptocurrency wallets stored in an old NATO subterranean bunker off the coast of Maine."

"You don't care about the family," I breathed, reading the cold ambition etched into his face. "You never did."

"The family is dead," Arthur said dismissively. "Eleanor is a vain, shrieking parasite. Father was a cowardly bureaucrat who hid behind Mother's vanity. And Victoria... Victoria is an old spider who forgot that even spiders get squashed."

He leaned in, his dark eyes boring into mine. "The Genesis Vault has a dual-key biometric protocol. Father established it under our mother’s direct bloodline. It requires two direct maternal descendants to unlock the physical vault doors and release the encryption keys."

I felt the blood drain from my face.

"You and me, Claire," Arthur whispered, tapping my temple with the cool barrel of his pistol. "Eleanor is already in federal custody. Her DNA profile has been flagged across every port of entry in the Western Hemisphere. The moment she touches a biometric scanner, the Marshals drop from the ceiling. But you... you’re still an active operator in the system. The protocol recognizes your biological marker."

"I will let you shoot me before I give you a single cent," I said, every syllable laced with pure, undiluted venom.

Arthur sighed, shaking his head with mock sadness. "I know you would, little sister. That's why I didn't come to you with threats against your life."

He turned on his heel and gestured toward a steel bulkhead at the far end of the dry dock. A heavy iron door slid open with a screech of rusted gears.

Two heavily armed contractors in unmarked tactical gear dragged a battered figure into the light, forcing him to his knees on the freezing floor.

Ethan.

His face was bruised, blood caked around his hairline, his tactical vest stripped away. But his eyes—those fierce, unwavering gray eyes—locked onto mine the second he saw me.

"Claire!" he yelled, his voice strained as he strained against the zip-ties binding his arms behind him. "Don't listen to him! Don't give him anything!"

Behind Ethan, another mercenary stepped out of the shadows. In his arms, trembling with terrified silence but alive, were Leo and Maya.
