Chapter 59 - The Dead-Man's Lock

*[WARNING: ANOMALY DETECTED IN CITIZEN REGISTRY.]*

The automated voice was no longer smooth; it was sharp, urgent, and backed by a deafening klaxon that began wailing from the cavernous ceiling.

*[ARTHUR VANCE JR. RECORDED AS DECEASED UNDER DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE PROTOCOL 9. INITIATING BIOMETRIC CONTRADICTION INTERLOCK. ASSET FREEZE ACTIVE.]*

Arthur froze, his hand still on the plate, his face draining of all color. "What? No! Override! Override authorization code 99-Tango!"

*[OVERRIDE DENIED. GLOBAL NOTICE BROADCAST TO INTERPOL, UNITED STATES MARSHALS SERVICE, AND NAVAL STRIKE COMMAND. LIVE BEACON ACTIVE.]*

Arthur turned on me, his eyes wide with unhinged fury. "What did you do?!"

"I didn't just upload the ledgers, Arthur," I said, my voice cutting through the wail of the sirens. "When Ethan and I built the digital dead-man's trigger six months ago, we uploaded the biometric markers of every single Vance family member—living and dead. The moment you scanned your eye, you confirmed to every military radar in the hemisphere that the dead son of Arthur Vance was alive and standing on a classified black-site island!"

"You crazy bitch!" Arthur roared, drawing his weapon.

Before he could level the barrel, a deafening crack shattered the air.

Ethan had moved.

The moment the sirens tripped and the mercenaries turned their heads toward the blinking consoles, Ethan had lunged. He seized the barrel of the nearest guard's rifle, driving an elbow with bone-crushing force into the man's throat, ripping the weapon free in a single, fluid combat movement.

Three rapid shots echoed through the cavern.

The two remaining contractors dropped to the catwalk before they could even squeeze their triggers.

"Leo, Maya, down!" Ethan bellowed, bringing the captured rifle up and laying down a suppressing burst toward Arthur.

Rounds sparked violently off the tungsten vault door. Arthur dove behind the concrete pedestal, returning fire with wild, frantic precision.

"Claire, run!" Ethan shouted, advancing across the catwalk, providing cover fire as the facility’s automated security systems began to plunge into full lockdown.

Above us, the high-pressure hiss of halogen gas began venting from the overhead pipes. The heavy blast doors at the bunker’s main entrance began their slow, hydraulic descent, groaning under thousands of pounds of pressure.

The trap was closing.
