Chapter 91 - The Midnight Summons

The driver didn’t step out to ask for a signature. He simply dropped a sealed, heavy titanium lockbox onto the front gatepost, turned the vehicle around, and accelerated down the private access road before I could even stand up from the porch.

Emily tensed instantly, stepping back behind the doorway with Leo. "Brian... don't."

"Stay inside," I told her quietly.

I walked down the steps, my senses instantly returning to high alert. The box was cold, polished metal, devoid of shipping labels, postage, or federal seals. On its top surface was a biometric fingerprint scanner, glowing with a soft, pulsing crimson light.

I hesitated. Every rational instinct told me to call Harris, to let the bomb disposal unit take it to a quarry and detonate it under twenty feet of sand.

But inscribed into the titanium lid, beneath the scanner, were words etched in my mother’s unmistakable, delicate cursive script:

*For my son Brian. The truth Arthur never knew.*

My heart hammered against my ribs. I placed my right thumb against the scanner.

A chime sounded. The pneumatic seal hissed, releasing a puff of pressurized nitrogen. The heavy lid folded open mechanically, revealing not an explosive, not money, and not legal deeds.

Inside lay a single, antiquated wax-sealed envelope resting atop a heavy, intricately carved gold signet ring bearing a crest far older than the United States—an emblem depicting an eagle clutching two crossed anchors beneath an imperial crown.

Beside it was a military-grade satellite transponder. As the air hit the internal circuitry, the transponder’s miniature display flickered to life. A single coordinate flashed on the screen, indicating a remote archipelago deep within the North Atlantic, followed by a live countdown timer reading:

**04:59:59**

**04:59:58**

**04:59:57**

Beneath the timer, a short text message decrypted line by line:

May you like

*Arthur was merely the custodian of the fourth gate, Brian. You proved yourself by taking his crown. But the Grand Council of the Sovereign Freight League does not recognize federal courts. You have five hours to answer the beacon, or the second fleet will not target your home—they will target the entire eastern seaboard.*

The transponder let out a low, vibrating chime, and from across the tree line on the southern ridge, the faint, unnatural flicker of a sniper optic flashed once through the morning mist.
