Chapter 18 - Stripping the Illusions

Arthur stared at the document on the table, his knees buckling. He fell forward, catching himself on the arm of a sofa, his chest rattling as he struggled for air. "You... you can't do that. The Harrington trust protects Vance Logistics from third-party hostile takeovers! It's in the bylaws!"

"The Harrington trust protects the firm *only* as long as the firstborn biological heir remains a recognized beneficiary of the estate," Emily spoke up, stepping forward with an elegant folder stamped with the seal of her family's legal council.

Her voice was smooth, razor-sharp, and absolute. "You breached that contract the second you submitted false tax declarations claiming Brian was not a voting shareholder. My family’s firm completed the forensic analysis while you were driving up here, Arthur. You systematically embezzled four point two million dollars from Brian’s trust over the past twelve years to cover Jason’s failed crypto ventures and speculative real estate losses."

Jason let out a pathetic whimper, his portfolio dropping to the floor, papers scattering across the polished hardwood. "Four million? Dad... you said that money came from corporate reserves! You told me it was my bonus!"

"Shut your mouth, you idiot!" Arthur turned on Jason, his veneer of patriarchal love finally shattering into raw, venomous self-preservation. "If you hadn't been so sloppy with the Vanguard wire transfers, none of this would have happened! You dragged this whole house down because you couldn't keep your hands out of the ledger!"

"Me?!" Jason yelled back, his voice cracking in sheer disbelief. "You spent thirty years telling me Brian was garbage, telling me I was the genius, telling me everything was mine! You created this! You told me we were untouchable!"

I stood beside Emily, watching the spectacle. The grand Vance family, the pillars of social superiority who had mocked my cheap car, laughed at my simple watch, and treated me like a parasite at Thanksgiving dinner, were tearing each other apart like wolves over scraps of garbage in my living room.

"Get out," I said.

The room fell instantly silent. Arthur looked up, his face twisted in desperate rage. "Brian... you can't throw your own mother into the cold! Look at her! If Julian freezes the accounts, we lose the house in Wellesley! We lose everything!"

"You didn't care about throwing me into the cold when you told me I wasn't welcome at your Christmas table three years ago unless I brought five thousand dollars for Jason’s startup," I said, my voice quiet, final, and devoid of hatred. "I survived without you. I built a life, a marriage, and a family that has nothing to do with your venom. Frank will escort you to the gate."
