Chapter 90 - Echoes in the High Castle

Three weeks later, the snow that had blanketed New England began to thaw into the pale, quiet promise of spring.

The federal fallout was cataclysmic. The arrest of Arthur Sterling had triggered the unsealing of dozens of secret indictments, toppling three foreign banking syndicates, half a dozen maritime shipping fronts, and exposing Marcus Harrington’s entire legacy as a fabricated shell company designed to siphon black-market capital.

In a federal penitentiary outside Boston, Jason Harrington had finally received his sentencing hearing. Stripped of every trust fund, abandoned by his high-priced defense lawyers who realized there was no money left to pay them, he had pleaded guilty to multiple counts of corporate conspiracy.

During the hearing, Jason had wept openly in his orange jumpsuit, begging the judge for leniency, claiming he had only followed Marcus’s orders. In the gallery, Amanda had sat completely alone, wearing an outdated designer coat, her social circle evaporated overnight. When Jason looked back at her, pleading for support, she had looked away in disgust.

The golden boy had finally been measured, weighed, and found entirely worthless.

I sat on the wooden porch of our coastal home, holding a cup of black coffee as the morning sun reflected off the calm waters of the bay. Emily walked out through the screen door, carrying Leo in her arms. The baby gurgled, reaching his tiny hands out toward the salt breeze, completely untouched by the violence that had nearly swallowed him.

Emily leaned down, pressing a gentle kiss to my temple, her fingers tracing the faded scar on my arm.

"The federal attorneys called," she said softly. "The assets have all been placed in an independent court-supervised escrow. Marcus’s properties, Julian’s shell companies... everything. You don't have to touch a single penny of their poisoned money."

"Good," I said, smiling as I reached out to let Leo grip my thumb. "We built our own fortune. We don't need a dime of Arthur's blood money."

For the first time in months, the air felt light. The shadows that had stalked us since that bitter Thanksgiving dinner had finally dissipated. We had won our freedom, our family, and our future.

Then, the private courier van pulled into the gravel driveway.
