Chapter 14 - The DNA of Truth

Emily picked up the hospital file from the table, turning the pages with swift precision. Her eyes narrowed as she read the blood work and the birth certificate signed by a doctor whose medical license had been revoked in 1991.

"Amanda forged the death certificate sent to Geneva," Emily said, looking up at Julian. "She told you the child died so you wouldn't return and challenge the Harrington family in court."

"Yes," Julian said, his eyes glistening with unshed tears. "And Arthur made sure I was blacklisted from state department rotations in North America for a decade. By the time I built my own firm in London and returned to the States, Amanda was a polished society matron, Jason was being groomed as the golden boy, and you... you were completely erased from public social registers. Arthur hid you in plain sight."

Julian pulled a small velvet box from his pocket and set it before me. Inside was a heavy signet ring carved with a silver falcon perched atop a broken wheel—the ancestral crest of the Sterling family. Beside it was a certified genetic profile run through an independent private laboratory in Zurich three days prior, comparing hair samples retrieved from an old brush Amanda left at a charity estate auction against Julian's own DNA.

"I don't expect you to call me father, Brian," Julian said softly, looking at me with raw vulnerability. "I missed your first steps. I missed your graduation. I wasn't there when Arthur made you feel small in front of your own family. But I am here now. And I brought the hammer down on Vance Logistics before I drove through your gates tonight."

Before I could answer, Emily’s phone buzzed sharply against the mahogany table. She picked it up, glancing at the caller ID. Her brow arched.

"Speak of the devil," Emily said, turning the screen toward me.

The screen read: *Arthur Vance (Mobile).*

It was 11:15 PM. Arthur never called me unless he needed someone to blame for a logistical failure at the depot. But this wasn't an ordinary night. The Thanksgiving dinner had ended in a disaster of Jason’s exposed fraud, and now Julian’s silent financial strike was clearly landing.

"Put it on speaker," I told her, my voice steady, the phantom weight of thirty years of familial guilt evaporating from my chest like mist.

May you like

Emily swiped the screen and tapped the speaker icon. Arthur’s voice tore through the quiet study, ragged, frantic, and trembling with an unhinged fury I had never heard from him before.

"Brian! Pick up the damn phone right now!" Arthur roared, coughing violently in between breaths. "What did you do? What did you tell your wife's family? Vanguard just froze our corporate reserve accounts! The state police are asking questions about Jason’s commercial paper bonds! Where are you?!"
