Chapter 45 - The Price of Arrogance

By dawn, Boston was blanketed in a freezing drizzle that turned the harbor into a slate-gray void. I stood on the rain-slicked curb of Atlantic Avenue, flanked by four plainclothes federal agents and Carter’s security team.

The old customs house loomed above us, its neoclassical stone columns blackened by a century of soot and ocean mist. Inside, beneath three floors of reinforced granite and reinforced steel, sat the repository of Marcus Harrington’s darkest dealings.

A fleet of black town cars pulled up to the curb at precisely eight-forty-five.

Victoria Vance stepped out onto the wet pavement under a large black umbrella held by a private security guard. She wore a tailored charcoal wool coat, her golden hair swept back, an expression of supreme, haughty confidence on her sharp face. Behind her walked two high-powered corporate litigators carrying thick leather briefcases.

She stopped dead on the marble steps when she saw me standing in the entryway.

"Brian," she said, her voice smooth, masking the slight flicker of irritation in her dark eyes. "I'm surprised to see you standing here in dry clothes. I assumed you'd still be pulling melted furniture out of your son's nursery."

"The cottage is fine, Victoria," I replied evenly, not giving her the satisfaction of seeing an ounce of rage. "And Leo is fast asleep, miles away from your circus."

She offered a cold, patronizing smile. "It doesn't matter. The clock has run out. In fifteen minutes, my counsel and the court-appointed receiver will open Vault 402 under the power of attorney granted by Jason Harrington. The original debt covenant will be authenticated, and forty percent of your company's controlling stock will be wired directly into Vance Holdings."

"You really should check your email before you walk into a federal depository," I remarked, stepping aside to let an older man in a navy trench coat step forward from the shadow of the doorway.

United States Assistant Attorney Miller pulled a signed federal warrant from his coat pocket.

"Victoria Vance?" Miller stated, his voice cutting through the damp chill. "At six-fifteen this morning, Jason Harrington executed a full rescission of all powers of attorney in the presence of federal prosecutors. He has entered into an immunity agreement regarding foreign financial fraud. Furthermore, Vault 402 has been sealed as an active crime scene under federal anti-racketeering statutes."

Victoria's smile froze. Her lawyers frantically pulled out their smartphones, their faces draining of color as the official federal notifications populated their screens.

"This is an international trust matter!" Victoria snapped, losing her aristocratic veneer. "Your domestic courts have no jurisdiction over maritime debt registered under British treaty!"

"They do when the money used to establish the trust was laundered through shell accounts to bribe domestic port officials in 1984," I said coldly. "My father kept meticulous records of his crimes, Victoria. And unlike you, he never signed anything without leaving a trapdoor to destroy everyone who tried to use it against him."
