Chapter 44 - The Vault Beneath the Harbor

The revelation hung heavy in the smoke-scented room. Jason hadn't just been a spiteful sibling; he had been the unwitting key Victoria needed to bypass the family’s domestic safeguards. Marcus, in his cynical paranoia, had placed the most dangerous legal vulnerability of his life under the name of the son he could manipulate the easiest.
"If the master covenant is under Jason's name," Emily analyzed, leaning over the desk map, "then Victoria's power of attorney is only valid if Jason remains legally competent and unrepresented by independent counsel."
"And if we invalidate that power of attorney before the Boston customs vault is opened," I realized, "the offshore tribunal has no legal instrument to seize our sovereign debt bonds."
"We have eighteen hours," Carter warned. "The customs house on Atlantic Avenue was decommissioned in the seventies. The subterranean vaults are private commercial deposit boxes now. Victoria’s legal team has already scheduled an emergency asset inspection for nine o'clock tomorrow morning."
I looked at Emily. The fierce light in her eyes showed zero hesitation. She had stood beside me when my family spat on my name, she had smiled through their arrogant mockery, and she had built a real, authentic life with me from nothing. We were not going to let a dead man's sins or an old blood pact tear apart the future we were building for our son.
"Carter, prep the armored convoy," I ordered. "We move Emily and Leo to the safehouse in the Berkshires under double security detail. I'm going to Boston."
"You're not going alone, Brian," Emily countered firmly, stepping up to me. She placed a hand on my chest, her touch steadying the storm inside me. "And you're not going without Jason's official revocation of attorney. If we're going to break Victoria's grip, we hit her in the open court of law, in the banks, and on the ground simultaneously."
"You want me to pull Jason out of state custody?"
"Not out," Emily said with a ruthless smirk that reminded me just how brilliant my wife truly was. "We're having the Department of Justice transfer him directly into federal protective custody as an unindicted co-conspirator. Victoria’s reach stops at the federal border."

I pulled her close, kissing Leo's soft forehead before pressing my lips against hers. "Be careful."
"Always," she whispered. "Now go finish what Marcus started. And remind Victoria Vance why the Harringtons never yield."
