Chapter 82 - The Blood Sovereign

The satellite screen hummed with a crystalline clarity that made the frigid room feel completely devoid of air. Through the audio feed, I could hear the rhythmic, mocking *tick-tock* of the silver pocket watch held in the old man's steady fingers. Behind him, the polished linoleum of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard’s subterranean visitor center was smeared with dark crimson. Two elite guards, men trained to counter foreign incursions, lay sprawled and motionless against the reinforced blast doors.

"Who the hell are you?" Harris spat, his service weapon trembling slightly in his grip as he shouted at the glass display. "Identify yourself immediately! That is a restricted Department of the Navy installation!"

The old man didn’t even blink. His slate-gray eyes remained anchored entirely on me, studying every curve of my jaw, every tense fiber in my shoulders, as if evaluating a thoroughbred he had bought decades ago and finally come to claim.

"Put the gun away, Special Agent Harris," the man said smoothly, his accent carrying the refined, aristocratic cadence of old Newport money mixed with an icy European detachment. "You are shouting into a monitor while my men hold the perimeter of your most secure vault. You are a footnote in an audit that should have been closed in 1989."

He turned the pocket watch once, snapping the casing shut with a sharp, resonant metallic click that sounded like the hammer of a revolver dropping into place.

"Arthur Sterling," I whispered, the name scraping out of my throat like shards of glass. The document burning on the mahogany desk beside me suddenly felt heavier than lead. The Sterling Maritime Syndicate—the phantom conglomerate that had secretly bought out transatlantic shipping corridors before vanishing behind a wall of blind Swiss trusts. "You died forty years ago. Your plane went down off the coast of Aberdeen."

"A convenient fiction, orchestrated so your mother could run with you under Marcus Harrington’s clumsy, drunken protection," Arthur said, a thin, patronizing smile curling his lips. "Marcus thought he was playing the protector, hiding you beneath a mundane suburban facade. He gave you his name to keep my associates from scouring the continent. But breeding, Brian... breeding always finds its way to the surface. You dismantled Julian Vance. You shredded Marcus’s fraudulent empire. You proved you have my blood, not Marcus’s cowardice."

My stomach lurched with sudden, violent clarity. "Where are Emily and my son?"

May you like

"Your wife is currently barricaded inside the auxiliary vault with little Leo," Arthur replied calmly, gesturing with his carved cane toward the steel hatch behind him. "A spirited girl. She managed to drop the hydraulic security gate before my team could escort them into the courtyard. But hydraulic gates are merely metal, Brian. And metal gives way to the proper pressure. I will give you two hours to reach Portsmouth and sign the surrender covenants Marcus stole from me. If you do not... the Sterling line will skip a generation, and I will raise my great-grandson myself."

The screen snapped to static.
