Chapter 89 - The Fall of the Shadow Sovereign

Outside in the corridor, the tactical operators had overwhelmed the remaining private contractors. The sharp smell of tear gas and extinguishing agents drifted into the room as Harris marched in, his weapon held low, followed by four federal marshals with zip-ties and medical kits.
Arthur Sterling lay on his back, breathing heavily, a trickle of blood running from his split lip onto his bespoke collar. His manic energy had collapsed, leaving behind only the frail, bitter shell of an old man who had outlived his own terrifying myth.
"Get him up," Harris ordered, his voice shaking with a mixture of shock and sheer professional triumph. "Arthur Sterling... you are under arrest for treason, racketeering, the attempted murder of federal officers, and sixty counts of international financial terrorism."
Two federal marshals hauled Arthur to his feet. Even with his hands cuffed behind his back, he stared at me with unblinking, serpentine fury.
"You think this ends here, Brian?" Arthur rasped, coughing weakly as the marshals pushed him toward the blast door. "You think you can walk away into the sunlight with your pathetic little domestic life? You opened the vault. You took Marcus’s ledgers. Every shadow in Europe, every broker in London and Hong Kong now knows that Arthur Sterling's heir walks the earth. You cannot put the blood back in the vein!"
"Take him out," I said quietly, turning my back on him.
I didn't watch them drag him into the corridor. I fell to my knees beside Emily, pulling her violently into my arms. She buried her face in my shoulder, her trembling hands clutching the back of my jacket while Leo cried against her chest.
"He's safe," I whispered over and over, kissing her hair, feeling her tears soaking into my neck. "Emily, look at me. He's safe. It's over."

She pulled back slightly, her hands reaching up to press against the bleeding wound on my arm. Her eyes were rimmed with red, but beneath the tears was an iron strength that had saved our son’s life.
"He didn't touch him, Brian," she breathed, her voice cracking with pure emotion. "He didn't touch our boy."
