Chapter 49 - The Promise Beneath the Yellow RosesThree years after the wedding that changed everything, Kalista drove to Lenora's coastal house on a quiet spring evening.

The garden was overflowing with flowers.
Yellow roses climbed the fence.
The front door was still painted bright yellow.
Lenora opened it before Kalista could knock.
"You're late."
"By four minutes."
"Four very important minutes."
Kalista laughed.
Inside, dinner was waiting.
Elias arrived shortly afterward carrying a bouquet and a bottle of sparkling cider.
Lenora watched them together with obvious satisfaction.
After dinner, she asked Elias to help move several flowerpots onto the porch.
Kalista stepped outside a few minutes later.
She found him standing beneath the roses.
He looked nervous.
That alone made her suspicious.
"Elias?"
"Kalista."
"What have you done?"
"Nothing terrible."
"That is not reassuring."
He laughed.
Then became serious.
"Three years ago, I met a woman who thought she had to control everything because she'd been hurt by people who wanted to control her."
Kalista's smile softened.
"I remember her."
"She was brilliant. Stubborn. Occasionally terrifying."
"Occasionally?"
"Frequently."
Kalista laughed.
Elias took her hands.
"But she was also learning that love didn't have to be a battle."
He paused.
"I don't want your company. I don't want your money. I don't want to change the person you've worked so hard to become."
Kalista's eyes filled.
"I want to build a life beside you."
Then he took a small ring box from his pocket.
"Will you marry me?"
For a moment, Kalista couldn't speak.
She remembered her first wedding.
The enormous ballroom.
The expensive flowers.
The promises that had concealed control and cruelty.
Now she stood in a little garden.
There were no cameras.
No investors.
No elaborate contracts disguised as romance.
Only a man who had spent years proving that her choices mattered.
Kalista smiled through her tears.
"Yes."
Elias exhaled.
"Yes?"
"Yes, Elias."
He slipped the ring onto her finger.
She kissed him.
From the kitchen window, Lenora watched with tears streaming down her face.
When the couple turned toward her, she quickly pretended to be watering a plant.
Kalista burst out laughing.
"Lenora!"
"What?"
"How long have you known?"
Lenora smiled.
"Long enough to bake your favorite cake."
That night, beneath the yellow roses, Kalista understood something she had once believed impossible.

She could love someone deeply without surrendering herself.
And she could be loved without being owned.
