Chapter 26 - The Price of SilenceCeleste's offer arrived at nine the following morning.

Thirty million dollars.

That was the proposed price for Kalista's investment company to acquire Vale Urban's Harbor Row development interests.

It was an enormous number.

But Marcus understood the real message.

"She wants you to take over the redevelopment and inherit the public anger."

Kalista scanned the proposal.

The price included a confidentiality agreement, broad liability releases, and a provision preventing public discussion of historic financing arrangements.

"She isn't selling property," Kalista said.

"She's selling silence."

Marcus nodded.

Kalista called Celeste directly.

"Your offer is rejected."

Celeste laughed softly.

"You haven't even negotiated."

"I'm not buying immunity disguised as real estate."

"You're making a mistake."

"Then it's mine to make."

Celeste's voice cooled.

"Do you know what the public will think when they learn why you married Thatcher?"

Kalista felt the familiar chill of old shame.

"That I made a calculated and unethical personal decision in pursuit of corporate control?"

"How refreshingly candid."

"I've already acknowledged it."

"Not to everyone."

A pause followed.

Then Celeste continued.

"People love a woman who defeats a monster. They love her less when they discover she's willing to manipulate people herself."

Kalista looked at the scar on her wrist.

She had spent months confronting that part of her past.

It still hurt.

But she would no longer pretend it hadn't happened.

"If you have something truthful to say about me, say it."

Celeste's silence lasted several seconds.

Then the call ended.

By lunchtime, a major financial publication had received confidential documents describing Kalista's original marriage strategy.

And by evening, the headlines were everywhere.

THE BILLIONAIRE BRIDE WHO MARRIED FOR CONTROL.

Kalista watched the news spread.

For the first time since Sterling's downfall, her reputation was in danger.

But the more painful blow came when she received a message from Elias.

The residents have seen the article. They want to know whether they can trust you.

Kalista read it twice.

May you like

Then she replied.

They deserve to hear the truth from me.
