Chapter 30 - The Offer That Could Save ThemCeleste's second offer was far more dangerous than the first.

She no longer asked Kalista to buy the development interests.

Instead, she offered the Harbor Row residents a generous relocation package.

Every qualifying household would receive financial assistance.

Moving costs would be covered.

Temporary accommodation would be arranged.

For families exhausted by uncertainty, the proposal was tempting.

At the residents' meeting, opinions divided immediately.

Some wanted to accept.

Others refused to leave.

A young mother named Rebecca stood near the front.

"My son needs a stable place to sleep. I can't spend another year fighting in court."

An older resident replied, "And I can't start my life again somewhere else."

Arguments rose.

Kalista waited.

Then she spoke.

"Both of you have valid concerns."

Elias looked at her, surprised.

She continued.

"Nobody should be forced to sacrifice their security for a cause they didn't choose. And nobody should be pressured into abandoning their home."

"What do you suggest?" Rebecca asked.

"We examine the offer independently. We calculate what relocation actually costs. And we investigate whether staying can be made safe and affordable."

Elias nodded.

"No one should be asked to make a decision without knowing their options."

That evening, Kalista and Elias stayed behind to organize the residents' questions.

As they stacked the chairs, he glanced at her.

"You're not going to try to persuade everyone to stay?"

"No."

"Why not?"

"Because that would make me another person deciding what they should want."

He smiled.

They walked outside together.

The streetlights had just come on.

Elias stopped near her car.

"Can I ask you something personal?"

"Depends."

"Do you ever stop working?"

"Occasionally."

"What do you do?"

Kalista considered the question.

Meetings.

Contracts.

Legal disputes.

Investor calls.

She realized she didn't have a satisfying answer.

Elias laughed at her expression.

"That's what I thought."

He looked toward the neighborhood bakery.

"There's a place down the street that makes terrible coffee and excellent pie."

"That doesn't sound like a recommendation."

"It isn't. It's an invitation."

Kalista hesitated.

For months, she had kept every part of her life carefully controlled.

Then she smiled.

"One slice."

"Two forks?"

"Don't push your luck."

They walked toward the bakery.

And for one quiet hour, Kalista forgot about Celeste Vale, North Quay, and the empire she had once been willing to sacrifice everything to control.
