Chapter 23 - The Man Who Refused Her MoneyKalista arrived at Harbor Row on Monday morning wearing a tailored black coat and shoes far too expensive for the cracked sidewalks.

She immediately regretted the shoes.

The neighborhood looked nothing like Celeste's redevelopment brochures.

Children waited for school buses outside aging brick buildings.

A small bakery filled the street with the smell of fresh bread.

Neighbors greeted one another from open windows.

It was worn.

It needed repairs.

But it was alive.

Near the community center, a tall man in rolled-up shirtsleeves was reviewing architectural drawings with several residents.

He looked up as Kalista approached.

"You're the investor."

"Kalista."

"Elias Moreno."

He offered his hand.

His handshake was firm.

His expression was cautious.

"I understand you're interested in helping."

"I am."

"Then here's my first request. Don't buy anything."

Kalista blinked.

"Excuse me?"

"Every wealthy person who visits this neighborhood thinks ownership is the solution."

"I wasn't planning to displace anyone."

"Neither were the last three developers. At least, that's what they said at first."

Kalista studied him.

Elias was an architect specializing in affordable housing rehabilitation. He had grown up two streets away, and his mother still lived in Harbor Row.

Unlike the businessmen Kalista usually encountered, he appeared unimpressed by wealth.

"Then tell me what you need," she said.

Elias pointed toward a group of residents gathered inside the center.

"Ask them."

Kalista looked through the glass doors.

"That's why I'm here."

"Good. Because they don't need another hero."

His words irritated her.

Perhaps because they were true.

Inside, Margaret Ellis sat beside a window holding a notebook filled with questions about the redevelopment notice.

When she saw Kalista, she stood.

"You helped us get our grant back."

"We're still working on what was stolen from you."

Margaret gently touched her arm.

"I know. But I don't want to move again."

Kalista looked around the room.

The faces watching her were not numbers on a financial spreadsheet.

They were people who had spent years trying to build ordinary lives.

She removed her expensive coat and sat beside Margaret.

"Then tell me what staying here would mean to you."

May you like

For the next two hours, Kalista listened.

And for once, she did not make a single promise she couldn't yet keep.
