Chapter 35 - The Night the Lights Went OutThe first serious crisis came on a Wednesday evening.

An electrical fault caused a power outage in one Harbor Row building.

Residents were evacuated while inspectors assessed the problem.

Celeste's representatives immediately used the incident to argue that redevelopment was the only responsible solution.

News coverage showed frightened families standing outside their homes.

The headlines were dramatic.

Kalista arrived to find Elias speaking with emergency personnel.

"Is anyone hurt?"

"No. Everyone got out safely."

"Can they return?"

"Not until the electrical system is made safe."

Rebecca stood nearby holding her sleeping son.

Her face was exhausted.

"This is what I was afraid of," she whispered.

Kalista approached.

"Temporary accommodation is being arranged."

Rebecca looked at her.

"Please don't tell me everything will be fine."

Kalista stopped.

Then nodded.

"You're right. I won't."

Elias joined them.

"We'll need a licensed contractor to repair the fault and inspectors to confirm the building is safe."

"And tonight?" Rebecca asked.

"Tonight, we make sure everyone has somewhere safe to sleep," Kalista replied.

Working alongside local volunteers, the residents' association coordinated emergency accommodation.

Kalista's independent support fund helped cover immediate expenses where other assistance was unavailable.

No cameras followed them.

No speeches were delivered.

Near midnight, Elias found Kalista helping distribute blankets.

"You're still here."

"So are you."

"You're going to ruin that coat."

She looked at the dark blue fabric.

It was covered with dust.

"Apparently I have a habit of ruining expensive clothes during emergencies."

He smiled.

"At least nobody's getting married tonight."

Kalista laughed unexpectedly.

For a moment, the tension broke.

Then Elias looked toward the families sleeping in the temporary shelter.

"This is why we can't pretend the buildings are fine just because people want to stay."

Kalista nodded.

"And why we can't force them to leave simply because repairs are expensive."

Their eyes met.

No easy answer.

No miraculous victory.

Just a difficult problem they were both willing to face.

Later, as the neighborhood finally grew quiet, Elias offered her his hand.

Kalista took it.

And this time, neither let go.
