Chapter 38 - The Man Who Asked NothingElias invited Kalista to dinner at his apartment.

Not a restaurant.
Not a private club.
A small apartment overlooking a street lined with ordinary shops.
He cooked pasta.
Badly.
Kalista tasted it and set down her fork.
"Elias."
"Yes?"
"What did these noodles do to deserve this?"
He burst out laughing.
"I was hoping you'd be polite."
"I married Thatcher. I've already made enough terrible decisions to last a lifetime."
The laughter faded.
Elias looked at her carefully.
"Do you ever think about him?"
"Sometimes."
"Do you miss him?"
"No."
She considered her answer.
"I miss the version of myself who thought everything could be controlled."
Elias sat opposite her.
"Was she happy?"
Kalista looked down.
"No."
He waited.
For the first time, she told him about the wedding without focusing on the business battle that followed.
She described the instant Thatcher struck her.
The shock.
The humiliation.
The unbearable realization that the person standing beside her had chosen his father's approval over her safety.
Elias did not interrupt.
He did not tell her to be grateful she had escaped.
He did not call her strong as a way of ending the conversation.
He simply listened.
When she finished, he said, "You should never have had to live through that."
Kalista looked at him.
"And I shouldn't have entered that marriage under false pretenses."
"Both things can be true."
Her eyes filled unexpectedly.
That simple acknowledgment meant more than a hundred declarations of admiration.
Later, while they stood beside the apartment window, Elias reached toward her hand.
Then stopped.
"May I?"
Kalista smiled through her tears.
"Yes."
He held her hand gently.
No pressure.
No possession.
No demand.
Just warmth.
When he kissed her, it was slow and careful.
Kalista closed her eyes.
For once, she wasn't calculating what the moment meant for tomorrow.
May you like
She was simply there.
And it was enough.
