Chapter 7

The offer hung in the air, a grotesque testament to Julian’s belief that every human being, every moral failure, and every marriage had a precise, negotiable price tag. Thomas looked at the man who had systematically destroyed his family, then shifted his gaze to Amber, who was now weeping softly against Julian’s shoulder—not out of love for the director, but out of absolute terror of the impending crash. The sheer pathetic nature of their alliance sickened Thomas far more than the betrayal itself. They weren't master criminal masterminds; they were desperate, greedy cowards trapped in a web of their own reckless arrogance.

"You think everything can be bought, don't you, Julian?" Thomas said quietly, his voice carrying a dangerous, razor-sharp edge. He didn't raise the case; he simply held it steady at his side. "You think you can walk into a man's home, sleep with his wife, turn his life into a corporate dumping ground, and then write a check to make the mess go away." Thomas took another deliberate step forward, forcing Julian to physically yield ground, stepping backward into the hallway to avoid a collision. The power dynamic in the room had shifted irrevocably; the predator was now the prey.

Amber shrank back against the wall, realizing that Thomas wasn't going to take the bribe. The cold, unyielding look in his eyes was something she had never seen in the seven years of their marriage—a terrifying clarity that brooked no negotiation. "Thomas, where are you going with that?" she asked, her voice a terrified whisper, realizing that the leather case contained not just corporate documents, but the literal keys to their destruction. "If you take that downstairs, if you call the authorities—we're ruined, Thomas. Your son's mother will be in a federal penitentiary. Do you want that for Noah?"

It was a cruel, calculated manipulation, weaponizing their five-year-old son as a final shield against justice. Thomas stopped dead in his tracks. For a microsecond, his expression flickered with pain, the image of Noah playing happily on the rug just an hour ago flashing through his mind. But the hesitation vanished as quickly as it came, replaced by a cold, hardened resolve. He looked directly into Amber’s tear-stained eyes, stripping away years of false intimacy with a single, devastating sentence. "Noah deserves better than a mother who uses him as cover for a crime syndicate," Thomas said flatly. "And he certainly deserves to know the truth before you taught him to lie."

Julian’s hand remained deep in his pocket, his fingers curling around the heavy metal casing of his smartphone, where a panic button app linked directly to his private security detail was waiting to be triggered. He calculated the distance to the stairs, weighing his options between a violent confrontation and a tactical retreat. "You're making a catastrophic mistake, Thomas," Julian warned, his voice dropping into a low, venomous rumble. "You think you're holding all the cards, but you're stepping into a machine much larger than yourself. People like us don't just go to prison quietly; we make sure everyone around us falls into the pit too."

Thomas didn't bother to dignify the threat with a response. With the leather case firmly gripped in his right hand, he brushed past Julian and Amber as if they were nothing more than inconvenient furniture in his own hallway. He walked down the mahogany staircase, leaving the two conspirators stranded in the upper shadow of their own making. Below, the living room was still bathed in the warm, golden glow of the chandelier, the half-eaten food and crystal glasses serving as ghostly reminders of a birthday party that had turned into a tribunal. Thomas walked straight toward the ornate front entryway, his thumb sliding over his phone's screen to dial emergency services.
