Chapter 31 - The Shadow of the PastTwo years after the trial, Thomas thought the ghosts of Sterling Meridian had finally been laid to rest. The downtown office where he worked as a senior auditor felt safe, far removed from the high-stakes corporate corruption that had once torn his family apart. But peace in the corporate world is often fragile.

One rainy Tuesday afternoon, a courier delivered a heavy manila envelope to Thomas’s desk. There was no return address, only a red wax seal—a mark that instantly triggered a cold dread in his chest. Inside was a single photograph and a typed note.
The photograph showed Amber leaving her volunteer center, but standing just ten feet away, partially obscured by an umbrella, was a man whose face Thomas recognized from old corporate security logs. It was Viktor Vance, Julian Vance’s younger brother, who had spent the last three years operating out of Zurich.

The note read: "The trial imprisoned a puppet. The master is still expanding his reach. Tell your ex-wife that her debt to the Vance family is past due."
Thomas stared at the paper, his hands trembling. He had spent years teaching Noah that the truth would keep them safe, but looking at the photograph, he realized a terrifying reality: the remnants of Julian’s syndicate hadn't disappeared; they had simply gone underground, waiting for the right moment to strike back.
