Chapter 16 - THE NIGHT THE LIGHTS WENT OUTThomas moved Noah to a secure federal residence before midnight.

He told his son they were going on a special adventure, and Noah accepted the explanation with the easy trust of a child who believed his father could solve anything.
At 2:17 a.m., the power failed at the temporary apartment.
Security cameras went dark.
A backup alarm activated.
Within minutes, federal agents discovered that someone had accessed the building's service corridor using a stolen contractor badge.
The intruder never reached Thomas's apartment, but the message was unmistakable.
The next morning, Daniel gathered the investigation team.
“We have a compromised security system, an anonymous threat, and a financial trail leading to Sterling Meridian. We need to assume the same network has access to private information about our witnesses.”
A technician discovered that the intruder had used credentials issued to a security subcontractor employed by a company partly owned by Sterling Meridian.
That gave investigators their first direct link between the threats and Richard Sterling's business network.
Thomas asked whether Victoria could have ordered the intrusion.
“We have evidence of access,” Daniel said. “We don't yet have evidence of who authorized it.”
Thomas hated the distinction, but he understood its importance.
That afternoon, Amber agreed to provide a full sworn statement.
She described the transactions she had witnessed, the documents Julian had forced her to sign, and the months she spent secretly copying evidence.
She also admitted that, in her desperation, she had deleted several emails she believed could expose her plan before she was ready.
Daniel warned her that investigators would need to verify every detail.
“I don't expect you to trust me,” Amber said. “I only want the truth to survive long enough for Noah to grow up without being afraid of it.”
Meanwhile, federal agents obtained a new recording from a company conference room.
Julian Vance could be heard speaking with Victoria Sterling.
“If Margaret's records ever surface, your father won't survive the exposure,” Julian said.
Victoria's response was cold.
“Then make certain they never surface.”
The recording ended before revealing what she meant.
But it was enough to convince prosecutors that Julian's activities extended beyond his division and into the Sterling family itself.

As Thomas listened, he realized the conspiracy had been protected by people who believed their wealth placed them beyond consequences.
Now, for the first time, they were beginning to fear the truth.
