Chapter 20 - THE ORIGINAL LEDGERVictoria's records revealed that the original ledger had never been stored at Sterling Meridian's headquarters.

It was kept inside a private archival facility registered to a dormant foundation.
The foundation had been established in Margaret Hale's name without her knowledge.
Thomas found the detail in a list of corporate entities extracted from the micro-drive.
He immediately recognized the address.
It was the building shown in the photograph his wife had found in the hidden box.
Daniel obtained a search warrant.
Federal agents entered the facility before dawn. The building appeared abandoned, with dusty offices and empty shelves, but a concealed security room contained a locked cabinet connected to a separate alarm system.
Inside were three bound ledgers and a sealed envelope.
The first ledger documented corporate transfers.
The second listed payments to public officials.
The third contained handwritten annotations in Margaret's distinctive script.
It was the evidence investigators had been searching for.
The envelope contained a short note from Margaret addressed to whoever eventually found the records.
Money can be moved. Companies can be renamed. People can be frightened into silence. But a record of what happened is harder to destroy when it survives in more than one place.
Thomas stood silently as agents photographed each page.
For years, he had imagined that his wife's secrets were the result of personal ambition or infidelity.
Now he understood the scale of the danger she had been trying to navigate.
He called Amber.
“They found it,” he said.
“The ledger?”
“All three.”
Amber began to cry.
“My mother did it. She actually did it.”
“She preserved the evidence,” Thomas replied. “And now it can finally speak for her.”
The forensic examination uncovered payments connected to bribery, fraudulent investments, and the security contractor who had confronted Margaret.
It also revealed that Julian Vance had concealed the original records under orders from Richard Sterling.
Victoria's testimony confirmed the chain of authorization.
But the ledger contained one final surprise.
A handwritten note beside the contractor's name stated that the assignment had been changed after the original instructions were issued.
The original instruction had been to retrieve the documents.
The amended instruction read:
Ensure the witness cannot testify.
The authorization carried Richard Sterling's initials.
Daniel stared at the page.
“This is no longer merely a financial conspiracy.”
Thomas felt a cold weight settle in his chest.

His mother-in-law's death might not have been an accident after all.
And the man who had ordered the operation was still free.
