Chapter 15 - THE HEIR TO THE EMPIREVictoria Sterling had spent her entire life being introduced as the future of Sterling Meridian Holdings.

At thirty-eight, she was polished, articulate, and widely regarded as the most capable executive in her father's organization. She appeared on business magazine covers, funded children's hospitals, and delivered speeches about corporate responsibility.
Thomas had met her twice.
Both times, she had been charming.
Both times, she had asked unusually specific questions about his work.
Daniel obtained a warrant to examine several offices associated with Sterling Meridian, but Victoria's personal records were held behind layers of legal protections.
The anonymous micro-drive changed that.
A forensic team extracted a series of encrypted financial records. Hidden among them were references to a dormant account named Caterpillar Trust.
The account had been opened twelve years earlier, shortly before Margaret Hale's death.
Its administrator was listed as V. Sterling.
When Daniel questioned Amber about the account, she recognized the name immediately.
“Victoria wasn't merely protecting her father,” she said. “She was moving money for him.”
“And the ledger?”
“Margaret believed the original ledger was kept separately because it contained the names of public officials who had approved the transfers.”
Thomas studied the documents.
One transaction stood out. A payment had been made to a private security contractor two days before Margaret's fatal accident.
The amount was small compared with the corporation's usual transfers, but the timing was unmistakable.
Thomas felt anger rising in his chest.
“Did Julian arrange her death?”
Amber shook her head.
“I don't know. He always said my mother had brought trouble upon herself. But when I found the payment, he refused to discuss it.”
Daniel instructed the forensic team to trace the contractor.
Meanwhile, Victoria appeared on television to announce that Sterling Meridian would cooperate fully with the investigation.
She called Julian Vance a rogue executive whose alleged crimes had shocked the company.
Thomas watched her carefully chosen words.
“She is sacrificing Julian,” he said. “She's trying to make herself look like the person who discovered the corruption.”
Daniel nodded.
“Which means she knows the evidence is getting close.”
That night, Thomas received a message from an unknown number.
It contained a photograph of Noah asleep on the sofa in their temporary apartment.
Beneath it were eight words.
Stop digging, or your son loses his father.
Thomas immediately contacted the security team.
Noah had not been harmed, and the photograph appeared to have been taken inside their apartment earlier that evening.
Someone had crossed their security perimeter.

The investigation was no longer simply about money or reputation.
It had become a direct threat to the one person Thomas would do anything to protect.
