Chapter 6

Standing in the doorway of the master bedroom was Julian Vance. The corporate director had slipped up the stairs unnoticed, shedding his polished, untouchable facade for something far more desperate and dangerous. Without his jacket, his silk shirt clinging slightly to his broad shoulders, Julian looked less like a respected executive and more like a cornered animal. His eyes were fixed entirely on the heavy leather case in Thomas’s hand, tracking its weight with a predatory intensity. The easy social charm that had defined him downstairs was completely gone, replaced by a cold, calculating survival instinct that made him infinitely more lethal.
"Put the box down, Thomas," Julian said, his voice low, steady, and devoid of any warmth. He didn't block the exit entirely, leaving just enough space for Thomas to feel like he had an out, though the heavy frame of the doorway made escape an illusion. "You don't understand the scope of what you're holding. That's not just personal property; those are sensitive corporate assets that involve national security contracts. If you walk out of this room with that case, your life—and Amber’s—won't be worth the paper it's printed on." It was a thinly veiled threat, delivered with the casual menace of a man who commanded entire legal departments to crush obstacles.
Thomas didn't flinch. He adjusted his grip on the leather handle, feeling the solid weight grounding him against Julian’s intimidation. "Spare me the corporate thriller speech, Julian," Thomas replied, his tone chillingly calm. "You were running an espionage ring out of my house, sleeping with my wife, and using my child as an unwitting pawn in your little game. You're not protecting national security; you're protecting your own skin from federal prison." Thomas took a step forward, forcing Julian to make a split-second decision whether to stand his ground or step aside.
Before Julian could react, soft, hurried footsteps echoed up the stairs behind him. Amber appeared in the doorway, breathless and disheveled, her makeup smeared around her eyes from crying. She took in the scene—Thomas holding the case, Julian blocking the exit, the palpable tension thick enough to cut with a knife. Her face contorted in sheer panic, realizing that the worst-case scenario had not only materialized, but was actively playing out before her eyes. She lunged forward, grabbing Julian’s arm, not out of affection, but out of a shared, desperate terror of total annihilation.

"Thomas, please," Amber choked out, her voice breaking as she reached out a trembling hand toward her husband, stopping just short of touching his sleeve. "It’s not what it looks like... well, it is, but it’s more than that. Julian forced me—no, that’s a lie, we got in too deep, Thomas. They were auditing the firm, and if I didn't cooperate, they would have ruined us financially, destroyed everything we built!" Her narrative shifted frantically, grasping at any straw that might mitigate the catastrophe, her eyes wide with a desperate, pathetic pleading that only sickened Thomas further.
Julian shot Amber a murderous look, furious at her self-preservation instinct betraying the operation with loose confessions. "Shut up, Amber, you're only digging the hole deeper," Julian hissed, his teeth bared in a snarl. He turned his attention back to Thomas, his hand subtly sliding inside the pocket of his tailored trousers. "Look, Thomas, let's be rational businessmen. Name your price. A settlement, a transfer overseas, a multi-million-dollar buyout disguised as an investment portfolio. You can divorce her cleanly, walk away a very wealthy man, and pretend you never stepped foot in this room tonight. Everybody wins."
