Chapter 18 - EVELYN'S LAST SECRETEvelyn Shaw was found the next afternoon in a small lakeside cottage two hours outside the city.

She had gone there to retrieve a sealed metal case hidden beneath a loose floorboard.
When federal agents arrived, she did not resist.
“I knew someone would eventually come,” she said.
Inside the case were bank statements, correspondence, and a series of handwritten notes from Margaret Hale.
There was also a photograph of Richard Sterling meeting privately with the security contractor who had been paid shortly before Margaret's death.
Evelyn explained that Margaret had entrusted the case to her shortly before the accident.
“I was afraid,” she admitted. “I had a family. I thought keeping the documents hidden would protect them.”
“Why didn't you bring them to the authorities sooner?” Daniel asked.
“Because I didn't know which authorities were trustworthy. Some of the names in these records belonged to people who had the power to bury the case.”
She handed Daniel a sealed envelope addressed to Amber.
Inside was a letter written by Margaret.
My darling Amber,
If you're reading this, then I failed to finish what I started. I need you to understand something: people who build their lives around secrets eventually mistake silence for safety.
Don't make the same mistake I did.
If Julian threatens you, remember that he is not the only man responsible. Richard Sterling built the system, and his daughter has learned to protect it.
Find the ledger. Protect the truth. And never let fear convince you that you have to face everything alone.
Amber read the letter twice when Daniel brought it to her.
Then she broke down.
For years, she had believed that her mother died because she had been careless, reckless, or unwilling to accept the risks of her own investigation.
Now she understood that Margaret had tried to warn her about the very trap she had eventually fallen into.
Thomas sat beside Amber during the interview.
“I should have told you,” she whispered.
“Yes,” he replied. “You should have.”
She looked at him through tears.
“I don't expect you to forgive me.”
“I haven't forgiven everything. But I want the truth, Amber. All of it. Even when it's painful.”
She nodded.
For the first time since the birthday party, they spoke honestly about their marriage, their fears, and the choices that had brought them to this point.
Their relationship was not repaired in a single conversation.
But a door that had been locked for years finally opened.
Meanwhile, forensic investigators confirmed that the case contained enough evidence to reopen the investigation into Margaret's death.
One document was particularly important: an invoice showing that the security contractor had received a second payment from a company controlled by Victoria Sterling.

The first payment had been made before the accident.
The second had been made three days afterward.
