Chapter 79 - The Sanctuary of Glass

The truth struck me with the force of a high-speed train.

My father hadn't been captured by the Council. He hadn't been a victim of their genetic succession program. He was the architect.

"He never wanted you to inherit the empire," Clara whispered, her face pale as parchment, tears welling in her eyes as the horrifying tapestry finally fell into place. "He considered you weak because you chose to marry for love... because you refused to enforce the old family monopolies."

"He didn't just replace you with Elena," I rasped, staring at the green screen. "He engineered a clean bloodline. A new child, bred from his own genetic material and the stolen eggs harvested from you during your captivity in Zurich. A pure sovereign heir under his total control, completely unburdened by legal challenges or old treaties."

"And Lily..." Clara choked, looking toward the couch where our daughter lay sleeping.

"Lily is the only legal obstacle left," I said, cold fury replacing the terror in my veins. "As long as Lily lives, the primary trust cannot bypass her without proof of treason or illegitimacy. That's why Elena tried to frame me for your murder. That's why Cynthia tried to force Lily into exile. If Lily was stripped of her name, the entire trust reverted automatically to the newborn in Zurich."

I looked at the terminal clock.

`BIOMETRIC CONVERGENCE: 01 HOUR, 14 MINUTES REMAINING.`

"The clinic is on the Zürichberg hill," I said, grabbing my coat and checking the magazine of my weapon. "The glass pavilion overlooking the lake. That’s where the mainframe server is located, and that’s where the child is being kept."

"Julian, it’s a fortress," Clara said, stepping in front of me, her hand gripping my lapel. "You can't just storm the central sanctuary of the Sovereign Council. There will be an entire private army between you and the mainframe."

"I’m not storming it as an intruder," I said, pulling the floral handbag from the desk. Without its cryptographic frame, it was just a tattered piece of stitched canvas, but its pattern was known to every guard, every biometric scanner, and every operative in the organization. "I’m walking in as the prodigal son bringing the final key."

I knelt by the sofa and gently kissed Lily’s forehead. She stirred slightly, murmuring in her sleep, her tiny fingers clutching the collar of my shirt before relaxing.

"Stay here with her," I told Clara, my voice steady, stripped of all doubt. "Bar the doors from the inside. If I don't return before the clock strikes noon, take Lily to the French consulate and show them the master passport from the lockbox. Do you understand me?"

May you like

"Julian, don't do this alone," she pleaded, tears spilling over her lashes. "He's your father. He knows every move you will ever make."

"He knows the son he raised," I said, stepping toward the cellar door. "He doesn't know the father I've become."
