Chapter 78 - The Swiss Siphon

Two hours later, the locomotive sat abandoned in an overgrown rail spur beneath the industrial viaducts of northern Zurich.

We moved through the gray, fog-shrouded streets like phantoms. Clara wore a scavenged woolen trench coat, her arm bandaged and bound tight against her chest, carrying Lily securely against her heart. I carried the floral handbag slung over my shoulder, my hand buried in my coat pocket, fingers wrapped around the loaded service pistol I had stripped from the commando.

Our destination was a nondescript, eighteenth-century townhouse on the banks of the Limmat River—a property registered under a defunct textile company that my father had bought sixty years ago.

I led Clara through the rear cellar entrance, using a rusted skeleton key hidden behind a loose stone in the foundation wall. The heavy oak door swung open with a muffled groan, admitting us into a dry, stone-walled archive smelling of ancient paper, cedar, and gun oil.

"Is it safe?" Clara asked, setting Lily gently down on an antique velvet settee. The little girl was exhausted, her eyes fluttering closed the moment her head touched the cushion.

"It's the only place the Council never audited," I said, locking the iron deadbolts behind us. "My father kept this location off all digital registers."

I crossed the room to an antique mahogany desk where a bank of cathode-ray monitors hummed quietly, powered by an independent geothermal generator in the sub-basement. In the center of the desk sat a terminal that looked identical to the central processing mainframe described in my father's audio log.

I unzipped the floral handbag, pulling the intricate metal internal frame completely free from the hand-stitched silk seams. The brass skeleton was covered in thousands of microscopic, laser-etched circuits—a physical cryptographic bridge capable of bypassing any digital firewall on the continent.

I slotted the brass frame into the receiver bay beside the terminal.

The screens flared to life, green phosphor text scrolling at blinding speed.

`SOVEREIGN MAINFRAME: CONNECTED.`

`ACCESS LEVEL: ALPHA-FOUNDER.`

`CURRENT OVERRIDE INITIATIVE: LIQUIDATION OF VANE-DELACROIX ESTATE.`

I leaned over the keyboard, my fingers flying across the keys, pulling up the transfer authorizations.

"Look at this," I whispered, bile rising in my throat.

Clara came to stand beside me, her eyes widening in horror as she read the financial ledger. "Julian... the transfers aren't being sent to the High Council."

"No," I said, my voice trembling with a rage so profound it made my vision blur. "The Council was just the cleaning crew. Every dollar, every property, every sovereign patent stolen from our families... it’s all being funneled into a single private account registered in Zurich."

I highlighted the account beneficiary line.

A birth certificate and an active medical authorization appeared on the screen, dated yesterday afternoon.

The beneficiary of the entire multi-billion-dollar empire was not a shadow corporation. It was a living person.

The name on the screen made the air freeze in my lungs:

*Julian Vane Jr.*

Beside the name was the newborn baby from the photograph in the lockbox. And listed as the child's legal biological father was not my name, but the name of the man who had supposedly died in a plane crash ten years ago.

My father.
