Chapter 32 - The Sister in the Shadows

The shudder of the detonation dislodged a cascade of fine concrete dust from the arched ceiling, falling like gray snow across the sterile plastic sheeting of the medical bay. Evelyn stirred beneath her mask, a faint moan escaping her lips as her eyelashes fluttered.

Lily cautiously released her grip on my coat. Drawn by an inexplicable pull, she walked toward the bed, her small patent leather shoes clicking against the cold floor. Sarah didn't move, only holding her breath as Lily reached out a single finger, gently brushing against the identical twin’s cold wrist.

"She feels like me," Lily murmured, looking up at Sarah with large, questioning eyes. "Mommy... are you really my mommy?"

Sarah fell to her knees on the concrete, burying her face in Lily’s small shoulder, weeping silently with an agony two years in the making. "I am, my sweet bird. I am. I never wanted to leave you. Every single night, down here in the dark, I kept the second half of your locket warm against my chest."

From inside her collar, Sarah pulled a silver chain. Dangling from it was the tarnished half of the swallow locket—the exact match to the one hanging around Lily’s neck, the very piece the false bride Elena had tried so desperately to rip from Lily’s throat before we exposed her at the manor.

"The floral handbag," I said, the puzzle pieces clicking into place with horrifying clarity. "The lining wasn't just stuffed with offshore account numbers. The hidden cipher in the stitching—it was the medical schedule for this vault."

"It was the maintenance routing for the cryogenic preserves and the atmospheric scrubbers," Sarah said, rising quickly and wiping her tears with the back of her sleeve. "Evelyn was born with the De La Tour blood anomaly. Without the synthetic antibodies stored in this facility's cold lockers, her immune system collapses within hours. Elena stole my bag thinking it contained the master deed to the estate. She never realized that every floral pattern was a coordinates map for the pharmaceutical caches."

She spun toward a heavy stainless-steel refrigerator unit embedded in the far bulkhead. With practiced urgency, she entered an eight-digit override code. The hydraulic seals hissed open, revealing three pressurized glass cylinders glowing with an amber liquid.

"We cannot stay here," Sarah urged, packing the ampoules into an insulated field kit. "When the timer hits zero, the air filtration vents will automatically flood this bunker with halon gas. The Matriarch initiated the scorched-earth protocol the second you bypassed the South Gate terminal."

"How did they find the location?" I demanded, drawing my sidearm and inspecting the magazine.

"Because," Sarah said, pointing a trembling hand toward the ceiling where the surveillance camera sat dark and dead, "they didn't follow you, Julian. They followed the tracker inside Lily's locket."
