Chapter 73 - The Zurich Coordinate

Silence fell over the viaduct, broken only by the whistling gale and Lily’s trembling sobs.

Clara collapsed onto the grating, gasping for breath, her hand pressed against a bleeding gash along her ribs where her sister's knife had grazed her flesh. Blood dripped between her fingers, steaming slightly against the frost.

I held Lily tightly with one arm and crawled toward her. "Clara... is it really you?"

She looked up at me, tears cutting clear channels through the grime and blood on her cheeks. She reached out, her trembling, scarred fingertips touching my jawline, finding the small childhood scar beneath my ear that no Council operative could have known about.

"You gave me that scar when we were seven," she whispered, her voice choking on a sob. "In the apple orchard behind the manor, when you tried to catch me jumping from the stone wall. You said... you said you would always catch me."

The dam broke inside my chest. I pulled her into my arms, sandwiching Lily between us, burying my face into Clara’s neck. The scent of her—the real Clara, smelling of pine needles, old parchment, and the lingering traces of the rosewater soap her mother had taught her to make—was unmistakably authentic.

"I'm sorry," I choked out, the tears freezing instantly against my cheeks. "I didn't know. The woman in the house... the woman who walked down the aisle with me..."

"She had all of my journals," Clara wept, clutching my coat. "They drugged me for six months, interrogating me, recording every memory, every mannerism, every look. They wanted a docile vessel who would bear a child with your bloodline, unlock the Swiss reserves, and then have you quietly eliminated."

"And Lily?" I asked, terror gripping my heart as I looked down at the little girl shivering in my arms.

"Lily is mine, Julian. Our daughter," Clara said fiercely, kissing Lily’s forehead until the child stopped crying and reached for her mother’s hair. "Before they locked me away, before the switch was finalized... I was already pregnant. They didn't know until the third month. Elena carried out the public role, but they harvested my cord blood, monitored my vitals from the basement facility. That photograph in the lockbox..."

I reached over and grabbed the damp photograph from the grating. The woman holding the newborn on the Zurich clinic's terrace.

"That wasn't taken forty-eight hours ago," Clara said, her voice dropping into a dangerous whisper. "That was taken two years ago, right after Lily was stolen from my arms and handed to Elena to complete the illusion. The Council hasn't just been hunting us, Julian. They're preparing to wipe the slate clean. The clinic in Zurich... that's where the Sovereign High Council keeps the central ledger mainframe. And that's where your father was taken before he disappeared."

I stared at the photograph, then at the antique satellite communicator lying beside it. A blinking green LED suddenly began to pulse on the communicator's console.
