Chapter 64 - The Sovereign Ledger

"She’s on that train," Clara said, coughing up dark soot as she scrambled to her feet and checked Lily for injuries. The girl was scraped and shivering, but whole.
"She has to be," I said, reloading my sidearm with the final spare magazine I had scavenged from Harrison’s body. "That line leads directly to the Blackwood Deep-Water Anchorage. That’s where the Vance syndicate keeps their offshore servers and sovereign maritime transport."
Lily tugged at my sleeve. Her small fingers were pointing down at the gravel beneath our feet.
There, half-buried in the crushed stone where Cynthia’s lift must have exited, lay the obsidian handbag. The clasp had sheared off during her hurried escape, bursting the seam wide open.
I dropped to one knee and pulled the bag from the debris.
Unlike the soft silk of Clara’s heirloom, this bag was lined with Kevlar-threaded microfiber, designed to protect whatever lay within. From the split compartment, I pulled out a heavy, leather-bound volume wrapped in waterproof parchment, along with a stack of brass micro-aperture punched cards dating back half a century.
I flipped the ledger open under the dim glow of my tactical light. Clara gasped over my shoulder.
"These aren't financial accounts," Clara whispered, her voice trembling. "Julian... look at the names."
Page after page was filled with names, birth dates, blood types, and liquidation dates. It was an unbroken chronicle of thirty years of Vance family purges. Every branch relative, every illegitimate child, every sovereign heir who showed a shred of defiance against the central council had been cataloged, stripped of their legal identities, and exiled or eliminated.
My father’s name was there, marked with a red wax seal dated twenty-four years ago: *TERMINATED — NORTH VIADUCT.*
And at the very bottom of the final page, entered in fresh, still-tacky black ink:
*LILY VANCE. STATUS: EXTRACTION MANDATED. DESTINATION: EXILE COLONY SECTOR 9.*

"They never intended to just kill her," I growled, my heart pounding with a mixture of terror and murderous rage. "They were going to ship her to the overseas penal labor settlements. To erase her forever so the Trust could never be challenged."
"Julian," Clara whispered urgently, looking toward the tracks. "The train is moving!"
