Chapter 31 - The Twin in the Cradle of Glass

The iron door weighed several tons, its counterweights groaning against the damp subterranean walls as I threw my entire weight against the emergency manual wheel. The gears shrieked, metal grinding against metal, until the heavy tongue of the locking bolt slammed back into the steel frame with a hollow, echoing thud.
The immediate silence of the vault was suffocating, broken only by the rhythmic, fragile beeping of the cardiac monitor.
I turned back, my breath coming in jagged gasps, my eyes refusing to accept the impossible reality standing before me. Sarah was there. Thinner than she had been two years ago, her skin marked by the pallor of a subterranean existence, but the fire in her emerald eyes was unmistakably hers.
"Julian," she whispered again, taking a single step toward me before stopping herself, as if afraid she might shatter the fragile moment. Her hands trembled, her knuckles raw and bruised.
Beside me, Lily clutched my overcoat with both hands, her tiny body trembling so violently I could feel her heartbeat through the heavy wool. "Daddy..." she whimpered, her voice choked with confusion and sheer panic. "Who is that? Why... why does she look like me?"
My gaze shifted from Sarah to the clinical bed in the center of the chamber. Beneath the plastic canopy and the nest of transparent tubing lay another child. Her skin was translucent, pale as porcelain, her raven hair curling across the white pillow in identical spirals to the daughter clinging to my side. If not for the plastic oxygen mask and the intravenous port taped to the back of her tiny hand, I would have believed I was looking at Lily’s reflection in an antique mirror.
"Her name is Evelyn," Sarah said softly, tears tracking through the dust on her cheeks. "She was born three minutes after Lily. The night you thought I died in the river, Julian... they didn't just ambush my car to steal the family trust. They came for the bloodline."
"The syndicate told me there was only one child," I rasped, the rage and confusion burning hot in my throat. "You died in that water, Sarah. I buried an empty casket because the current took your body. I spent twenty-four months fighting off wolves, protecting Lily from exile, marrying a viper who wore your jewelry and tried to poison our child!"
"I know," Sarah wept, looking at the glowing red terminal behind the bed. The numbers were descending with merciless precision: *00:44:12*. "Elena was planted by the elders the moment they realized Lily was within your custody. But they never knew about Evelyn. The physician at the clinic hid her in the false compartment of the ambulance while my car burned. If they find this vault, Julian, they won't just execute us. They will harvest Evelyn’s bone marrow to ratify the consortium’s genetic trust, and Lily will be cast into the northern labor camps."

The red numbers flickered to *00:43:59*. High above us, muffled through twenty feet of reinforced concrete, the first dull boom of explosive breeching charges shuddered through the earth.
