Chapter 9 - The Desperate Gambit

Deep inside the dimly lit, cigar-scented library of the Greenwich Private Club, Grant Whitmore gripped a crystal glass of cheap scotch with trembling fingers. His tie was undone, his collar frayed, and the manicured composure he had spent ten years curating was entirely destroyed.
Sitting across from him in a deep leather armchair was Julian Thorne.
Thorne was sixty-two, silver-haired, with cold, predatory eyes that had seen hundreds of young men rise, stumble, and get eaten alive in the concrete canyons of Manhattan. He twirled an unlit Havana between his fingers, looking at Grant with the mild, clinical disgust one might reserve for a drowned rat.
"You're a mess, Whitmore," Thorne said smoothly, his voice low and raspy. "You've turned yourself into the biggest laughingstock on the Eastern seaboard. Every news feed in the country is running footage of you playing the petty tyrant on a tarmac, only to get your throat cut by your own wife."
"She didn't just cut my throat, Julian!" Grant hissed, leaning forward, his eyes bloodshot and frantic. "She orchestrated this! She set me up! She let me run the company for years just waiting for the right moment to humiliate me and take everything back!"
"And you walked right into the bear trap with your secretary on your arm," Thorne chuckled darkly. "Brilliant strategy. Truly visionary leadership."
"I don't need your sarcasm, Julian! I need your capital!" Grant slammed his glass onto the antique table. "I know how the Vance Trust works. I know the proprietary source code for the new automated logistics algorithm that Whitmore Dynamics was developing. It’s worth hundreds of millions. Claire thinks she locked me out of the server, but I have a cold-storage backup on a hard drive in my safe deposit box!"
Thorne’s eyes narrowed slightly. The predatory gleam in them sharpened. "The Vance algorithmic infrastructure? Claire’s father spent twelve years developing that."
"And it's mine," Grant lied desperately, his breathing ragged. "I have the encrypted drive. Back me, Julian. Fund my legal defense, give me twenty million in seed capital to launch a rival firm in Delaware, and I will hand you the keys to Claire Vance’s entire empire. We can crush her before she even finishes restructuring."
Thorne leaned back, tapping his cigar against his chin. He studied Grant for a long, agonizing minute.
"You really believe you outsmarted her, don't you?" Thorne asked softly.
"I know I did!" Grant insisted, his voice rising in hysterical triumph. "Claire is a socialite. She relies on Arthur Sterling and old family lawyers. She doesn't have the stomach for a street fight. Once we file the counter-suit for intellectual property theft, she’ll be forced to settle to keep her family name clean!"
Thorne smiled. It was a cold, reptilian curving of the lips.
"Very well, Grant," Thorne said, standing up and buttoning his double-breasted suit. "Bring me the hard drive. Bring it to the penthouse suite at the Carlyle tonight at eight o'clock. If the data is authentic, my legal team will draft the funding agreement before midnight."
Grant let out a long, ragged exhale of pure relief. He felt the blood rushing back into his chest, the intoxicating warmth of salvation. "You won't regret this, Julian. We're going to destroy her."

"I'm sure," Thorne murmured as he turned toward the door. "Until eight o'clock, Grant. Don't be late. As you well know... punctuality is everything."
