Chapter 31 - The Counter-Strike

Silence fell over the federal conference line, thick and suffocating. Judge Holt stared at the screen, her mouth slightly agape, her pen frozen mid-air above her legal pad. The Assistant U.S. Attorney dropped his glasses onto the desk with a sharp clatter.
"Mr.... Mr. Vance?" Judge Holt stammered, leaning so close to her camera that her face blurred. "Henry Vance?"
"In the flesh, Evelyn," Henry said smoothly, leaning back in his chair with the calm demeanor of an emperor holding court. "I apologize for my prolonged absence from Manhattan society. As the Department of Justice will soon verify via the encrypted biometric telemetry currently uploading to your secure terminal, I have been under intensive medical rehabilitation following an assassination attempt orchestrated by Arthur Sterling and his Obsidian syndicate twelve years ago."
"Lies!" Julian screamed, leaping to his feet so violently that his orange plastic chair clattered against the concrete floor. "It’s a deepfake! It’s an AI projection created by Claire’s tech firms! Henry Vance died in a fireball in 2012! Your Honor, do not look at that screen! Grant the probate order! Look at the clock! The default timer has five minutes left!"
"Shut up, Julian," I said, my voice cutting through his hysteria like a razor.
"Counselor," Judge Holt barked at Julian’s attorney, her voice shaking with outrage. "Restrain your client immediately, or I will hold him in summary criminal contempt!"
"The default clause in the Genesis charter," Henry continued, his voice utterly devoid of mercy, "explicitly states that in the event of the primary founder's physical appearance before a court of competent jurisdiction, all secondary powers of attorney, conservatorships, and heir delegations are null and void *ab initio*."
Astrid tapped the enter key on her console.
On the split-screen, the digital countdown timer of the Genesis Trust suddenly froze at *00:03:14*.
The crimson numbers dissolved, replaced by a massive golden banner:
*PRIMARY BIOMETRIC VERIFIED: HENRY VANCE. FULL SOVEREIGN CONTROL RESTORED.*
"And pursuant to Section 44 of the Trust Charter," I stepped back into the camera frame, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with my father and Astrid, "any party who attempts to execute fraudulent probate against the founder's estate forfeits all personal holdings, clearinghouse accounts, and blind trusts directly to the primary beneficiary."
"Which is Claire Vance," Daniel added, holding up an encrypted legal brief to his webcam. "Your Honor, we have just submitted the counter-filing. Every asset Julian Sterling hid under dummy corporations in Delaware, every offshore clearing account in the Caymans, and every penny of the fifty million dollars he embezzled with his mistress, Evelyn Reed, has just been seized under federal forfeiture."
Julian staggered backward until his spine hit the concrete wall of the prison holding room. Tears of pure, unadulterated terror began streaming down his face, cutting tracks through the grime on his cheeks.
"Claire... please..." Julian sobbed, sinking down the wall until he was curled on the floor, clutching his head in his hands. "Claire, listen to me! Arthur forced me! They threatened to kill me if I didn't get close to you! I loved you, Claire! You have to believe me, the affair was just a cover—they made me do it!"
"You put your secretary in my seat," I whispered, every word calculated to drive a dagger into what remained of his pathetic soul. "You looked me in the eye and told me to remember my place."
I leaned close to the camera, my eyes burning with cold, beautiful fury.
"My place is on the throne, Julian. And yours is in the gutter."
Judge Holt brought her heavy wooden gavel down on her desk with a thunderous crack that echoed through the speakers.
"Bail is permanently denied," Judge Holt declared coldly. "Mr. Sterling, you will be remanded to the maximum-security wing of the Metropolitan Detention Center pending federal charges of grand treason, corporate espionage, and attempted murder. This court is adjourned."
The New York video feed cut to black.
Inside the Norwegian bunker, Daniel let out a long, ragged exhale and slumped into a chair, laughing in disbelief. "We did it. My God, Claire... we did it. Julian is destroyed. Arthur is buried. The entire Obsidian financial network has just been seized by Vance Global."
Henry reached out, taking my hand in his. A rare, warm smile touched his weathered face. "You did well, daughter. You proved yourself worthy of the name."
For the first time in forty-eight hours, the crushing weight in my chest began to lift. Julian was gone. My father was alive. The empire was secure.
May you like
Then, the bunker's secondary tactical terminal emitted a low, rhythmic chime.
