Chapter 22 - The Midnight Cipher

The feed was coming from inside an ultra-secure medical facility somewhere in Northern Europe.

The camera showed a private room surrounded by state-of-the-art life-support equipment. In the bed lay an elderly man whose face was obscured by an oxygen mask and heavy bandages.

Beside the bed stood a woman dressed in an immaculate white coat. She turned slowly to face the camera, lifting a small remote control.

She had piercing gray eyes—eyes that looked terrifyingly identical to my own.

"Hello, Claire," the woman spoke in a calm, melodic voice with a cultured British accent. "It seems you’ve made quite a mess of Arthur’s little operation. I must congratulate you. You handled your pathetic ex-husband and that disposable little secretary with admirable ferocity."

Daniel froze beside me. "Claire... I’m running a facial recognition trace on her right now. The database is hitting a sovereign-level classification wall. She's protected by the highest tier of British and French intelligence."

"Who are you?" I demanded, leaning over the console mic. "What is this?"

The woman on the screen smiled, stepping aside to reveal the monitor tracking the heartbeat of the man in the bed.

The heart monitor was synchronized to a live digital counter displaying a multi-billion dollar Vance trust account—an account that had been dormant for thirty years, an account that even my father’s vault ledger had listed as *'The Genesis Trust.'*

"Arthur Sterling was an arrogant brute who thought he could steal what belongs to our bloodline," the woman said softly, her gaze piercing through the monitor. "He believed he killed your father twelve years ago. But Arthur was only ever a pawn in a game far larger than oil or stock markets."

She reached out and gently laid her hand on the forehead of the unconscious man in the bed.

"Your father didn't hide Aegis Horizon to destroy Arthur, Claire," the woman said, her voice dropping into a chilling whisper. "He built it to hide *himself*."

My breath hitched. The air left my lungs completely.

"What did you just say?" I gasped, my knuckles turning white against the desk.

"Henry Vance didn't die in that helicopter, little sister," the woman said, leaning close to the camera, her smile sending ice directly through my veins. "He traded his life to protect me. And now that you've dismantled the security network protecting his location... they know where he is. Welcome to the real game, Claire. The plane is fueled. If you want our father to take his next breath, you have four hours to reach Oslo."

The screen instantly flashed into static and went dead.

Simultaneously, Daniel’s phone lit up with a high-priority alert from our private hangar at Teterboro.

"Claire," Daniel whispered, his face pale as ash as he looked up from his screen. "Marcus just reported... our Gulfstream’s navigation system was remotely overridden two minutes ago. The flight plan has been locked to Norway. We can't cancel it."

I stood frozen in the center of my empire, the champagne flutes catching the cold neon light of the Manhattan midnight, realizing that the nightmare had not ended.

It had only just begun.
