Chapter 25 - The Father in the Glass Cage

The heavy blast doors of the subterranean complex vibrated with a dull, concussive thud that rattled the fillings in my teeth. The first breaching charge had been detonated at the surface elevator.
"They've bypassed the primary security gate," Marcus reported, checking the feeds. "They’re using military-grade thermite. The upper airlock won't hold for more than seven minutes."
"Who are they, Astrid?" I demanded, standing firmly beside my father’s stasis pod. "Stop speaking in riddles! Who wants my father dead so badly that they’d invade sovereign Norwegian territory with a private strike force?"
Astrid tossed a sidearm toward Daniel, who caught it with surprising competence, and handed another to Marcus.
"Twelve years ago, your father discovered that the world’s elite central clearinghouse—the Genesis Trust—wasn't just an investment pool," Astrid said, her voice rapid and cold. "It was an extortion engine run by an international syndicate called the Obsidian Circle. Politicians, royal houses, Fortune 500 CEOs—all of their darkest secrets, shell companies, and illicit funding were routed through Genesis. Henry was chosen to be their primary architect. When he realized what they were building, he threatened to leak the master ledger to international tribunals."
"So they blew up his helicopter," I whispered, the cold reality settling over me like lead.
"They tried to," Astrid corrected. "Father knew the strike was coming. He planted a double in the chopper, had Arthur Sterling fake the coroner's dental records, and vanished into this bunker. Arthur took over his public seat to act as a decoy, pretending to serve the Syndicate while secretly siphoning their funds to keep Henry alive. But Julian... your pathetic husband... was the leak."
My blood ran cold. "Julian?"
"Did you really think a mid-level investment banker from Queens accidentally stumbled into Claire Vance at a charity gala six years ago?" Astrid sneered, her eyes blazing with fury. "Julian was recruited by the Obsidian Syndicate to infiltrate your inner circle. His job was to find the master cipher to the Genesis Trust, which they believed Henry had left to you."
The memory hit me like a physical blow: Julian's gentle hands stroking my hair as I worked late at night; Julian asking seemingly innocent questions about my father's old personal journals; Julian borrowing my private security tokens under the guise of handling our family tax structures; Julian putting that wretched secretary in my seat on the jet, desperate to push me out of the company so he could seize power of attorney over my father's dormant assets.
Julian hadn't just been an adulterer. He had been an assassin sent to dismantle my life from within.
"He failed," I said, my voice dropping an octave, ringing with deadly, unyielding authority. "Julian is rotting in a federal holding cell in lower Manhattan, stripped of every cent, his reputation burned to ash."
"He may be locked up, but his handlers are right outside that door!" Astrid pointed toward the shuddering steel bulkhead. "And they don't want the money anymore, Claire. They want the Genesis master drive, and then they want Henry Vance dead so no living soul can testify against them!"
Another massive explosion shook the floor. Chunks of plaster fell from the ceiling. On the monitor, the heart rate of my father dipped: *thirty-six beats per minute.*
"The peptide," I said, turning to Daniel. "Where is the shipment Arthur was holding?"
"It’s not in Bern," Daniel said, eyes widening as he read through a decrypted file on his tablet. "Claire... Arthur didn't keep the synthetic peptide in Switzerland. He anticipated you might freeze his accounts. He hid it in the one place no one would ever look."
"Where?" I demanded.
"In the pressurized cargo bay of your own Gulfstream," Daniel gasped. "It was logged under emergency medical stores for the jet. It’s sitting out there on the runway right now, inside the aircraft’s forward avionics compartment!"
Outside, the gunfire began. The sound of automatic weapons rattled through the ventilation shafts. The mercenaries had entered the outer perimeter.
Marcus cocked his weapon, his jaw set in stone. "The jet is surrounded by at least fifteen hostiles. Getting to that cargo bay is a one-way ticket."
I looked through the glass of the pod. Henry Vance’s pale, comatose face seemed so fragile beneath the flickering blue lights. For twelve years, he had lived in this frozen purgatory, sacrificing his life, his name, and his freedom so that I could live in safety. He had endured a decade of darkness to protect me from the beasts at the gate.
I was Claire Vance. I had brought Wall Street to its knees. I had crushed Julian without breaking a nail. I was not about to let these wolves butcher my father in his sleep.
"We aren't dying in a bunker," I said, stripping off my designer wool coat and racking the slide of a tactical pistol Astrid had left on the console. "Marcus, take the southern utility corridor. Astrid, activate the bunker's emergency halon fire suppression systems in the main corridor to blind them. Daniel, get on the Genesis terminal and prepare the injection protocol."
"What are you going to do, Claire?" Astrid asked, a flicker of genuine shock crossing her cold features.
May you like
"I’m going to retrieve my father's medicine," I said, my gaze burning with pure ice. "And I'm going to remind these mercenaries whose airspace they just violated."
