Chapter 30 - The Architect of Ruin

The video feed snapped into high resolution across the bunker's massive central display.

On the left side of the split-screen sat Judge Evelyn Vance-Holt—no relation, but a notoriously unyielding federal judge known for dismantling white-collar fraudsters with a flick of her gavel. Beside her was the Assistant United States Attorney, looking thoroughly annoyed to be summoned to an emergency video conference at four o’clock in the morning New York time.

On the right side of the screen sat Julian.

He looked pitiful. The crisp bespoke Brioni suits and diamond cuff links were gone, replaced by a drab orange prison jumpsuit that hung loose on his frame. His styled hair was messy, his jaw covered in rough stubble. But beneath the disheveled exterior, his eyes were burning with unmistakable, arrogant triumph.

Sitting beside his smug, high-priced defense attorney, Julian glanced at the clock on the wall of the conference room in lower Manhattan. He knew there were only twenty minutes left until the Genesis Trust defaulted to his control.

"Mrs. Vance," Judge Holt began, adjusting her glasses and looking at me through the camera. "Your counsel requested an emergency ex-parte hearing regarding the asset freeze against Mr. Julian Sterling. This court does not appreciate being pulled out of bed before dawn unless there is an extraordinary development."

"There is an extraordinary development, Your Honor," I said smoothly, stepping into the frame of the bunker camera, perfectly composed despite the sub-zero frost still clinging to my boots. "My estranged husband’s legal team has filed a sealed emergency motion with the probate court claiming executive conservatorship over the Vance family trusts, citing the presumed death of my father, Henry Vance."

Julian let out a short, mocking laugh. "Your Honor, please. Claire is unraveling. She illegally froze my personal accounts, slandered my character, and had me arrested on fabricated embezzlement charges because she couldn't handle that our marriage was over! The probate filing is entirely legal. Henry Vance has been legally dead for twelve years. Under federal succession law, those dormant accounts must be released to his surviving corporate entity!"

"And who controls that entity, Julian?" I asked, my voice dripping with calm, poisonous amusement.

"I do, Claire," Julian sneered, leaning into his microphone, his mask of the submissive husband completely dropping away. "Arthur Sterling assigned me full power of attorney three days ago. You thought you could destroy him in Switzerland? You thought you were so brilliant locking down Zurich? Arthur gave me the keys to everything. In fifteen minutes, this court won't have the jurisdiction to touch a single dime of my money. You are finished, Claire. You’re going to walk away from this with nothing."

"Is that so?" I tilted my head. "You really believed Arthur was your father's master, didn't you? You really believed that you and your secretary could take my seat on my jet, bleed my father's accounts, and walk away into the sunset?"

"I don't believe it, Claire. I know it," Julian smiled coldly. "The clock is ticking. You lost."

"Judge Holt," I said, stepping aside from the camera. "Before you rule on the probate validity of the Genesis Trust, the defense has one more witness to submit into evidence."

Astrid tapped a key. The camera panned slowly to the right, centering on the high-backed leather chair where Henry Vance sat, wrapped in a dark cashmere blanket, the golden glow of the Genesis interface humming softly against his temple.

The color instantly drained from Julian’s face.

His jaw dropped. His eyes bulged in utter, paralyzing terror. His hands began to shake violently against the steel conference table.

"No..." Julian choked out, the sound barely a squeak. "No... that’s impossible... he died in the North Sea... he’s dead!"

Henry Vance leaned forward, his piercing ice-blue eyes fixing onto Julian through the digital screen with the weight of an approaching glacier.

May you like

"Julian," Henry spoke, his voice deep, resonant, and dripping with absolute authority. "You look terrible in orange."
