Chapter 20 - The Liquidation of a Titan

By midnight, the sprawling twenty-acre estate of Arthur Sterling on the shores of Lake Geneva had been plunged into complete, silent darkness.

Just as he had cut the power to my ballroom in New York forty-eight hours earlier, the estate's high-voltage feeds were severed at the municipal junction. The electric perimeter gates swung open under manual emergency protocol, allowing three unmarked tactical vehicles carrying Swiss cantonal bailiffs and Vance private security to roll onto the manicured grounds.

Inside the grand library, illuminated only by the dying embers of a stone fireplace, Arthur Sterling sat alone.

His phone was dead. His private security team had dispersed an hour earlier after their payroll accounts bounced. The raiders, the sycophants, and the offshore bankers had vanished like smoke.

The heavy mahogany doors of the library pushed open.

I walked into the room, my footsteps clicking rhythmically against the antique parquet. Behind me walked Daniel and two armed Swiss bailiffs holding the official federal eviction and arrest decrees.

Sterling looked up, his face sunken, looking every bit of his eighty-two years. The ruthless titan of industry was gone; in his place sat an old, broken tyrant stripped of his kingdom.

"You came in person," Sterling croaked, his voice brittle.

"Of course I did, Arthur," I said, stopping ten feet from his chair. "A Vance always settles her accounts face-to-face."

Sterling looked down at his shaking, spotted hands. "Henry would be proud of you. But he would also be terrified. He had a conscience, Claire. You don't."

"My father had a conscience, and you murdered him for it," I countered, my eyes burning with cold fire. "You thought his daughter would be a helpless pawn you could manipulate through a worthless, greedy little social climber like Grant. You thought I was weak because I chose to love."

Sterling laughed, a dry, rattling sound. "Grant was a fool. A pathetic boy who wanted to wear a king’s crown without fighting a single war. I gave him the money to make you miserable, Claire. I wanted you broken so you would sign the papers without reading them."

"And instead, I read every single line," I replied. "You took twelve years of my father’s life from this world. Today, you lose everything. Your companies, your reputation, your freedom, and your fortune. Tomorrow morning, Vance Global will absorb Sterling Energy at ten cents on the dollar. The name 'Sterling' will be scrubbed from every building, every museum wing, and every stock exchange on Earth."

The lead bailiff stepped forward, unrolling the formal federal warrant. "Arthur Sterling, by order of the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland and under mutual legal assistance with the United States Department of Justice, you are hereby placed under arrest for murder, commercial fraud, and high-level corporate sabotage."

Two officers moved forward and pulled Sterling from his chair. He didn't fight. He offered no resistance as the cold steel handcuffs clicked around his wrists.

As they led him toward the door, Sterling stopped beside me, turning his cloudy eyes to meet mine.

"You think you’ve won, Claire?" he whispered, a twisted, sinister smile touching his withered lips. "You think I was the head of the snake? Henry didn't just steal from me. He stole from people who operate far above the financial markets. The Obsidian Trust was only one room in a very large house."

"Then I’ll burn the entire house down," I said softly.

May you like

Sterling chuckled, shaking his head as the bailiffs led him into the night. "Good luck, little Claire. Let’s see what happens when the real masters come to collect."
