Chapter 28 - The Genesis Protocol

The glass cylinder hissed open, the hydraulic seals releasing a cloud of chilled vapor that curled across the floor like morning mist over an arctic battlefield.

Astrid was instantly at our father’s side, wrapping a heated thermal blanket around his trembling shoulders while Daniel monitored the telemetry screen. Henry Vance coughed violently, expelling the remaining stasis fluid from his lungs, but his grip—even after twelve years in a synthetic coma—was surprisingly ironclad. He grabbed my wrist with trembling fingers, pulling me close until his cold breath brushed my ear.

"The jet..." he rasped, his voice raw and gravelly from disuse. "Claire... did they take the ledger from the jet?"

"No, Father," I said gently, kneeling beside the pod and covering his freezing hand with my own. "The Gulfstream is secure. The mercenaries are neutralized. You're safe."

"I am never safe," Henry whispered, his eyes darting frantically toward the monitors displaying the snowy runway outside. "And neither are you. Arthur... where is Arthur Sterling?"

"Arthur is in a federal detention center in Manhattan," Daniel answered from the terminal. "Stripped of his board seats, his assets frozen by Claire’s emergency injunction. He can’t hurt you anymore, Mr. Vance."

A bitter, chilling laugh escaped Henry’s pale lips. "Arthur was never the danger, boy. Arthur was my dog on a leash. He was an arrogant, greedy dog, yes... but he kept the wolves from the door. If Arthur is in chains, then the master has no reason to stay in the shadows."

I frowned, looking at Astrid. "What master? The Obsidian Syndicate?"

Henry slowly pushed himself upright, ignoring Astrid’s protests as she tried to force him back onto the medical gurney. The sheer force of will that had built Vance Global into an apex predator of global finance radiated from his gaunt frame.

"Obsidian is just a corporate shell, Claire," Henry said, his voice gaining strength with every second the synthetic peptides flooded his neural pathways. "A collection of cowardly billionaires hiding behind offshore private equity firms. But the man who directs them... the man who orchestrated my crash twelve years ago... you invited him into your bedroom."

The air left my lungs.

"Julian?" I whispered, my voice barely audible. "Julian is twenty-nine years old, Father. He was a junior analyst when I met him. He’s an idiot who traded his future for a cheap affair with his secretary!"

"Julian Sterling-Cross is thirty-four years old," Henry corrected, his ice-blue eyes piercing through me like a scalpel. "He is Arthur Sterling's illegitimate son, raised in London under an assumed identity, educated at Oxford on funds laundered through the Cayman Islands. He was trained from boyhood to study you. Your habits. Your vulnerabilities. Your pride."

The room spun violently around me.

Julian. The man who pretended to be intimidated by my wealth. The man who acted like a submissive, adoring husband while secretly embezzling fifty million dollars through dummy corporations. The man who looked me dead in the eye on my private jet and told me to remember my place.

He wasn't an opportunistic gold-digger. He was a weapon designed specifically to destroy me.

"Arthur planted him to dismantle your grip on Vance Global," Astrid explained grimly, typing on the central console to pull up an encrypted file buried beneath three firewalls. "The affair with his secretary wasn't just lust, Claire. It was deliberate psychological warfare designed to provoke you into a public, emotional divorce that would tank the company stock. If the stock dropped below four hundred dollars a share, the Obsidian Circle held a pre-set margin call that would have automatically liquidated your voting control."

"Except I didn't get emotional," I said, a slow, cold smile spreading across my lips despite the horror of the revelation. "I didn't crash the stock. I liquidated Julian's assets in twenty-four hours. I took his penthouse, his cars, his accounts, and threw him in a cell."

"And that," Henry said, a faint glimmer of pride breaking through his weathered face, "is why you are my true heir, Claire. You have ice in your veins. But you left one flank completely unprotected."

"What flank?" Daniel asked, leaning forward anxiously.

Henry pointed a trembling, skeletal finger at the Genesis Trust monitor. The screen was flashing a single, high-priority countdown timer: *01:42:15.*

"Julian knew that if his infiltration failed, Arthur had a dead-man switch," Henry rasped. "The Genesis Trust holds seventy percent of the global liquidity for sovereign debt clearing. If that countdown reaches zero without the master biometric signature, the system defaults to Arthur’s legal heir."

"Julian," I breathed.

May you like

"Even from inside a federal holding cell," Henry warned, "the moment that timer hits zero, Julian becomes the legal owner of two hundred billion dollars in untraceable sovereign capital. And the first thing he will do with that money is buy his freedom, buy the judges, and buy the private army that will erase every trace of Vance blood from this earth."
