Chapter 49 - Cold Iron Sacrifice

"He's triggering a core breach!" Liam yelled, lunging toward Sterling, but the rogue Admiral had already snapped the red toggle.

A catastrophic siren began to scream through the hull. Deep beneath us, the twin liquid-sodium reactors surged into uncontrolled criticality. The temperature gauges on the primary engineering panel spiked into the red: *CORE INTEGRITY: 40 SECONDS TO STRUCTURAL COLLAPSE.*

"Ellie, we have to get to the airlock!" Liam screamed, grabbing my arm. "The whole bay will be irradiated!"

"No!" I shouted back, tearing my arm away and diving onto the master engineering station. "If that core breaches here, the blast wave will vaporize Annapolis and wipe out half of Maryland! We can't run!"

"What do we do?" Liam asked, his voice shaking with the horrifying reality of what was unfolding.

"My father designed an emergency core ejection protocol," I said, my fingers blurring across the keys as alarms shrieked around us. "We can dump the liquid sodium into the lower ballast chambers and flood them with seawater! The thermal shock will ruin the sub's propulsion forever, but the salt water will neutralize the reaction!"

*CORE INTEGRITY: 20 SECONDS.*

"The emergency valve is manually locked from the secondary mechanical compartment!" I said, looking at the structural diagram. "The computer can't reach it! Someone has to physically crank the salt-water flood valve open!"

"I'll go," Liam said without hesitation, turning toward the ladder leading to the lower bilge.

"No, Liam!" I grabbed his tactical vest. "The heat in that compartment is already over two hundred degrees! Your human hands will burn before you can turn the wheel! The valve wheel is high-tensile steel—it takes three hundred foot-pounds of torque to turn!"

I looked down at my prosthetic leg and my reinforced mechanical brace.

"I can do it," I said. "My brace has a hydraulic assist."

"Eleanor, no! You won't make it back in time!"

"I am not leaving this ship to die, Liam! Now cover my exit!"

I sprinted down the narrow ladder into the lower reactor access shaft. The air was blisteringly hot, searing my lungs with every breath. The metal rungs burned through my gloves, but the synthetic sensors on my artificial limb registered only cold data: *Temperature: 240°F. Structural integrity: nominal.*

At the bottom of the flooded shaft sat the gargantuan iron flood wheel. It was red-hot, glowing faintly in the darkness.

I didn't hesitate. I locked my titanium brace directly into the spokes of the wheel. I activated the hydraulic booster on my knee hinge, pushing with every ounce of strength, every fiber of will, and every drop of Vance blood flowing through my veins.

*Turn, damn you! TURN!*

With a horrific shriek of metal on metal, the wheel groaned. The hydraulic piston in my leg whined at maximum capacity, steam hissing from the seals.

*Crack!*

The valve yielded. High-pressure Atlantic seawater rushed into the lower chamber with the force of a thousand firehoses. The icy water slammed into the molten containment shell, unleashing a monstrous cloud of white steam that blew through the exhaust vents.

On the console above, the shrieking alarms died.

*REACTOR CONTAINMENT STABILIZED.*

*PROPULSION OFFLINE.*

I collapsed into the knee-deep water, coughing, soaked, my mechanical leg smoking from the thermal shock, but my heart pounding with ferocious life.

From above, Liam’s strong arms reached down, hauling me up out of the steam and into the light.
