Chapter 29 - A Toast Under the Stars

That evening, the warm trade winds swept gently across the veranda of the Officers' Club at Pearl Harbor. The harbor below was illuminated by the lights of docked destroyers and carriers, their reflections shimmering on the tranquil, dark water.

Admiral Vance raised a crystal glass of bourbon toward the small circle gathered around our table: Julian, Liam, several high-ranking naval officers who had backed our mission, and me.

"To the memory of the *USS Gallant*," Vance toasted, his voice rich and deep. "To the unbreakable steel of the Ellison family. And to the future."

"To the future," we chorused, clinking our glasses together.

Liam laughed, leaning over the balcony railing, bantering with a group of fellow submarine officers who had flown in from San Diego to celebrate his miraculous return. For the first time in six months, the shadow of grief was gone from his eyes. He was whole again.

Julian stepped closer to me, leading me away from the laughter and toasts toward the quiet end of the stone terrace, overlooking the tranquil expanse of the Pacific.

"You did it, Ellie," he said softly, reaching out and brushing a stray strand of hair behind my ear. His touch sent a shiver of warmth across my skin. "Halston's empire is dismantled. NAVSEA has completely overhauled its metallurgy standards based on your dynamic stress models. And you got your brother back."

"We did it, Julian," I said, looking up into his dark, expressive eyes. "I couldn't have climbed out of that trench without you holding the lifeline."

Julian reached into the pocket of his dress uniform. He pulled out a small, velvet box and opened it under the soft tropical moonlight.

Inside rested a ring—not made of ordinary diamond or soft gold, but crafted from an exquisite braid of polished platinum and the exact same aerospace-grade titanium we had used to engineer the emergency bulkhead locks. Set in the center was a flawless, deep-blue sapphire that mirrored the color of the deep Pacific.

"Ellie," Julian said, his voice dropping to a tender, earnest whisper. "I fell in love with your brilliant mind the day you redesigned the *Gallant's* bulkheads. I fell in love with your courage the night Derek tried to humiliate you. And I know, beyond any shadow of a doubt, that you are the strongest, most extraordinary woman I will ever know. Will you build a life with me?"

Tears of pure, unadulterated happiness welled in my eyes. I looked down at the ring, then up at the man who had stood by my side in boardrooms, battlefields, and twelve hundred feet beneath the sea.

"Yes," I breathed, laughing through my tears. "Yes, Julian. A thousand times yes."

May you like

He slipped the titanium ring onto my finger, pulling me into his arms, and kissed me beneath the canopy of tropical stars as the ocean breeze hummed a gentle song of peace around us.
