Chapter 21 - Into the Abyssal Trench

The salt wind on the flight deck of the aircraft carrier whipped against my face, but the cold I felt had nothing to do with the ocean. It was the ice in my veins.

"Forty-six minutes," Julian muttered, his eyes glued to the oscillating telemetry streaming onto my ruggedized tactical tablet. "Ellie, the Mariana Trench acceptance trials were strictly classified. The Navy announced Liam's submarine, the *Defiant*, went down off the coast of Guam six months ago with all hands lost. If Liam is alive down there, someone faked his death. Someone deliberately buried him at twelve hundred feet."

"Derek Halston didn't just forge metallurgical certifications to save money on steel," I said, my voice hardening like tempered tungsten as I fastened the straps of my pressurized flight suit. "He built a ghost submarine. A testbed for unmonitored acoustic cloaking. And when the project went sideways, he locked the outer bypass valves and classified the entire hull as scrap at the bottom of the Pacific."

Admiral Vance marched across the flight deck, his long greatcoat trailing behind him like battle flags. Two armed naval aides flanked him, carrying the tactical launch clearance keys. The four-star admiral didn't bother with pleasantries. His weathered face was grim, etched with the fury of a warrior who discovered treason in his own ranks.

"Ellison," Vance barked, stepping within inches of me. "The Pentagon's automated fail-safe triggered the moment you unlocked Derek Halston’s encrypted ledger on the *Gallant*. Halston's secondary shell corporation, Obsidian Maritime, owned the remote override to Hull 805. When Derek was handcuffed, an automated scuttle command was transmitted via ELF broadcast. He didn't just want to hide his embezzlement. He wanted to drown the evidence—and your brother with it."

"Give me the *Triton-IV* rescue submersible," I demanded, stepping squarely into Vance's path. "The *Defiant’s* main ballast manifold is made of the defective carbon-titanium alloy Derek swapped in. It won't survive hydrostatic pressure beyond thirteen hundred feet. The moment that valve gives, the ocean will fold that hull like a paper cup."

"You're not a certified deep-sea diver, Ellie," Julian interjected, his hand firmly gripping my shoulder, his voice thick with desperate protectiveness. "Let NAVSEA deploy a drone team. If you go down there and the hull implodes—"

"Drones can't bypass Halston's biometric encryption, Julian!" I pulled back the sleeve of my flight suit, revealing the matte-black titanium prosthetic arm that Derek had mocked at the gala dinner. The micro-servos whirred softly beneath the synthetic skin. "My neural link was designed using the exact same proprietary bus architecture Derek used on Hull 805's subsea controls. My arm isn't just a prosthetic. It's the only key that can interface with the emergency hydraulic bypass."

Admiral Vance stared at my prosthetic arm, then looked into my eyes. For two agonizing seconds, the wind howled around us. Then, the Admiral reached inside his jacket, pulled out an emergency command bypass keycard, and slapped it into my palm.

"Thirty-nine minutes, Ellison," Vance commanded. "The crane is already swinging the *Triton-IV* over the starboard bay. Bring Commander Ellison home. And if anyone tries to stop you from surfacing, my entire strike group has orders to turn the ocean into glass."
