Chapter 39 - The Admiral’s Gala

One year after the night my dress slipped and the room laughed, the Waldorf Astoria hosted the annual Navy Relief Ball once more.
The grand ballroom glittered under thousands of crystal chandeliers. The finest crystal clinked, champagne flowed, and the highest ranks of military, diplomatic, and civil society filled the floor.
This time, when the grand double doors swung open, the entire room fell into an immediate, reverent silence.
I walked down the grand marble staircase on the arm of Liam, wearing an emerald-green, backless evening gown of heavy silk. The gown did not conceal my left side. The custom-crafted prosthetic—now a masterpiece of polished brushed chrome, gold-inlaid circuitry, and black titanium—gleamed brilliantly under the chandeliers like regal armor.
Beside us walked Admiral Vance, flanked by the entire active Joint Chiefs of Staff.
There was no mocking laughter. There were no cruel whispers.
As we reached the bottom step, Admiral Vance paused, turning to face me. He raised his crystal glass into the air.
Across the room, over five hundred decorated officers, ambassadors, and diplomats snapped to attention. In unison, every officer in uniform raised their right hand in a sharp, crisp salute to the young woman who had brought down a shadow empire.
"To the steel in our ships," Admiral Vance toasted, his voice carrying through the silent hall, "and to the unbreakable iron in our blood."
"To Eleanor!" the room roared in thunderous unison, followed by an ovation that shook the crystal chandeliers.
Liam smiled down at me, leaning in close. "You own this room, Ellie."
"No," I replied, raising my glass with my titanium hand, the golden circuits catching the warm ballroom light. "We built this room."
