Chapter 48 - The Architect’s Standoff

"Kill them!" Sterling roared.

Before the two operators could squeeze their triggers, Liam dropped and rolled to the right, firing three rapid shots. The operator on the right collapsed instantly. The second operator fired wildly, his burst tearing into the steel bulkhead behind me and sending ricochets whining through the CIC.

Liam lunged, tackling the second operator to the deck in a brutal, hand-to-hand grapple.

Sterling drew a silver automatic pistol from his tunic, aiming it straight at my heart. "You won't touch this console, girl!"

I didn't flinch. I didn't back down. The memory of the gala—the laughter, the humiliation, the smug sneers of men who thought steel and bone could be bought and sold—flashed through my mind.

I took one violent step forward, swinging my right leg—reinforced with solid aircraft-grade titanium—straight into Sterling's forearm.

The impact was deafening. The sheer force of the titanium brace shattered Sterling's wrist with a sickening crack. The pistol flew from his grip, clattering across the deck plates.

Sterling screamed in agony, staggering backward into the holographic table.

"You called me half a woman," I whispered, stepping over him, slamming the optical drive directly into the master quantum interface port. "Let me show you what the other half is made of."

*OVERRIDE DETECTED,* the ship’s computerized voice chimed. *ARCHITECT CLEARANCE ACCEPTED: VANCE, ELEANOR.*

*LAUNCH SEQUENCE ABORTED.*

The cobalt glow on the master screens abruptly died. The vertical launch tubes hissed as emergency pressure release valves vented the magnetic acceleration gases out into the ocean. The kinetic rods were safely locked into their storage cradles.

Across the room, Liam pinned the second operator to the deck, disarming him and securing him with zip-ties. Liam looked up, breathing hard, his uniform torn and bloodied, but his eyes were shining with triumph. "Ellie! You did it!"

Sterling, clutching his shattered wrist against his chest, looked up at me with eyes filled with venomous madness.

"You think... you've won?" Sterling gasped, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth. "You think I came here without a dead-man's trigger?"

He reached into his pocket with his left hand, pulling out a small, sealed radio transmitter with a single red toggle switch.

"If I cannot have the fleet," Sterling snarled, "then this harbor will burn in salt and fire. The reactor's magnetic containment field will collapse in ten seconds!"
