Chapter 20 - The Signal in the Dark

Three hours later, the Norfolk Naval Station was completely locked down under military guard.

Richard and Derek Halston had been escorted off the installation in full view of twenty national news networks, charged under the Espionage Act and federal racketeering statutes. The *Washington Post* banner headline had already gone live worldwide: *HERO OF THE GALLANT SAVES SUPERCARRIER FROM LETHAL SABOTAGE; HALSTON DYNASTY COLLAPSES IN SHAME.*

On the flight deck of the silent *Titan*, the mid-morning sun finally broke through the heavy coastal fog, bathing the Atlantic horizon in gold.

Admiral Vance stood with Julian and me near the forward catapult. The wind whipped our coats around us, clean and sharp with the scent of open ocean.

"The President just called my secure line," Admiral Vance said, his face relaxed for the first time in weeks. "The Secretary of Defense has personally approved the full cancellation of all Halston Dynamics naval contracts. Every single hull component across the fleet will be re-inspected under your personal oversight, Captain Ellison."

"Thank you, Sir," I said, leaning comfortably against Julian’s arm, my new temporary crutch firmly planted on the non-skid surface. "We'll build them right this time."

"I know you will, Ellie," the Admiral said, turning his piercing gaze toward the vast expanse of the open sea. "Because our people deserve ships that are as unbreakable as the men and women who sail them."

The Admiral excused himself to take another call from the Joint Chiefs, leaving Julian and me alone at the edge of the bow.

Julian looked down at me, his fingers gently finding mine, intertwining over the titanium ring on my hand. "It's finally over, Ellie. Derek is going away for twenty years. The company is destroyed. You held the line."

"Yes," I murmured, watching the grey waves roll against the steel hull hundreds of feet below. "We held the line."

Suddenly, the encrypted satellite receiver on my belt let out a sharp, rhythmic chirp.

It wasn't a standard Pentagon dispatch. It wasn't an automated maintenance log from NAVSEA.

It was an emergency tactical relay broadcasting on the ultra-low-frequency submerged submarine frequency—a channel used exclusively by deep-sea strategic assets.

I pulled the handheld device from my pocket and unlocked the screen.

A single red flashing icon illuminated the display, followed by a message originating from an unlisted transponder deep in the Mariana Trench:

*PRIORITY ONE: CRITICAL ANOMALY DETECTED IN KEEL METALLURGY OF USS TITAN'S SISTER SHIP, HULL 805 (USS DEFIANT).*

*TRANSIT STATUS: SUBMERGED, DEEP DIVE ACCEPTANCE TRIALS UNDERWAY.*

*HALSTON BYPASS VALVE LOCKED SHUT AT DEPTH: 1,200 FEET.*

*TIME TO CRITICAL STRUCTURAL IMPLOSION: 47 MINUTES.*

*LAST KNOWN OPERATOR ABOARD:*

*COMMANDER LIAM ELLISON.*

My breath stopped dead in my throat.

Liam.

My younger brother—the submarine commander whom the Navy had declared missing in action during a classified Pacific deployment six months ago.

He wasn't dead.

May you like

He was trapped at the bottom of the ocean inside Halston’s final, lethal secret.

"Julian," I whispered, the world around me grinding to a dead halt as the countdown timer began ticking down on the screen. "Get my flight gear. Liam is still down there."
