Chapter 24 - The Architecture of Betrayal

A violent jolt of electrical feedback surged through my neural implants, sending a blinding flash of white pain shooting straight into my brain stem. I gasped, dropping to my knees in the freezing, ankle-deep water, but I did not let go.
"Ellie!" Julian's voice shouted over the comms earpiece from the docking trunk. "The *Defiant's* keel just shifted three degrees! The rock shelf is crumbling! You have twelve minutes before the submarine slips into the Mariana abyss!"
"I've got the data stream!" I gritted out through clenched teeth, my vision swimming with hexadecimal code and corrupted system schematics.
My cybernetic interface was actively translating Halston's encrypted operating system. As the code scrolled past my retina, the full monstrosity of what Derek had done unfurled before me.
Hull 805 wasn't just a submarine with cheap steel. Derek Halston had secretly converted the *Defiant* into a weaponized acoustic surveillance vessel, intended for sale to a foreign defense contractor in Eastern Europe. When the Navy suspected irregularities and Liam Ellison—a commander renowned for his unbending moral compass—was assigned to oversee deep-water acceptance trials, Liam had uncovered the illegal modifications within forty-eight hours.
Derek couldn't afford an investigation. So, he activated a remote command sequence that deliberately jammed the main ballast discharge lines, sinking the *Defiant* during a classified test run, and bribed officials to list the crew as lost at sea.
Liam hadn't gone down quietly, though. He had managed to get his eighteen-man skeleton crew into the primary escape capsule three days ago, ejecting them to the surface while he stayed behind in auxiliary engineering to keep the reactor from melting down and poisoning the ocean.
"He stayed behind alone..." I whispered, tears burning my cold cheeks. "He stayed behind to save his crew."
"Ellie, override the solenoid!" Liam hammered on the glass, pointing down at the water rising to his chest inside the compartment. "The bilge pump just died! The hull is buckling above my head!"
*CRACK!*
A deafening sound, like a high-caliber rifle shot, reverberated through the steel deck. Overhead, a reinforced frame rib bent inward, spitting metal rivets like deadly shrapnel across the corridor. Seawater began cascading through the ceiling seams in violent, razor-sharp curtains.
"Override engaged!" I roared, pushing my neural interface past its thermal limits.
The magnetic lock on the watertight hatch hissed. The heavy steel wheel spun automatically.
With a deafening hiss of equalizing pressure, the bulkhead blew open. A wall of freezing water knocked me off my feet, slamming me against the bulkheads, but as the water receded, a pair of strong, trembling arms caught me.
Liam pulled me up from the swirling brine, dragging me against his chest.
"I thought I was dead, Ellie," he sobbed into my shoulder, his tears mingling with the saltwater. "I thought nobody was coming."

"The Ellisons don't leave their people behind," I gasped, wrapping both my flesh arm and my titanium arm around his shivering frame. "Now move! The ship is breaking apart!"
