Chapter 28 - The Unraveling Syndicate

Two weeks later, the federal courthouse in Honolulu, Hawaii was surrounded by international media, military police, and barricades.

The trial of Derek Halston and the conspirators of the Obsidian Maritime Syndicate had become the biggest military procurement and treason trial in modern history. The media storm that had begun with the viral video of the Admiral kneeling before me at the gala had culminated in an undeniable tidal wave of public outrage.

I sat in the front row of the gallery, dressed in a sharp, tailored navy-blue blazer. Attached to my left side was a brand-new, cutting-edge prosthetic—forged by the Navy’s elite biomechanical laboratory under the direct order of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. It was sleek, polished dark chrome, bearing the engraved emblem of the *USS Gallant*.

Beside me sat Julian, his fingers laced tightly with mine, his steady presence an anchor of warmth and strength. On my other side was Liam, dressed in his newly restored service dress blues, looking healthy, strong, and resolute.

The double doors of the courtroom swung open, and federal marshals led Derek Halston into the room.

The smug, arrogant billionaire from the gala dinner was gone. Derek was clad in an orange detention jumpsuit, his wrists and ankles shackled with heavy chains. His face was gaunt, his hair unkempt, his eyes wild with terror and desperation.

As he shuffled past our row, his gaze caught mine. He looked at my new chrome prosthetic, then at Liam sitting beside me, alive and whole. Derek’s mouth opened, trembling, but not a single sound came out. The arrogance that had once allowed him to humiliate me before high society had withered into absolute, cowardly ruin.

"All rise," the bailiff intoned as the federal judge took the bench.

The proceedings were swift, merciless, and absolute.

"On the charges of high treason, reckless endangerment of naval personnel, fraudulent military procurement, and the attempted premeditated murder of Commander Liam Ellison and Chief Engineer Eleanor Ellison," the judge read, her voice echoing through the silent courtroom, "this court finds the defendant, Derek Halston, guilty on all counts."

The gavel banged down like the crack of doom.

"You are sentenced to life imprisonment at the ADX Florence supermax facility, without the possibility of parole. May God have mercy on your soul, because the United States Navy will not."

Derek collapsed into his defense attorney's arms, weeping uncontrollably as the marshals dragged his chained, dragging feet toward the holding cells.

As he was pulled through the exit, I met his terrified eyes one last time. I didn't scowl. I didn't gloat. I simply raised my chrome hand, gave him a crisp, quiet salute of final dismissal, and turned away forever.
