Chapter 9

The following morning, the sun broke over the Moretti estate with a blinding, unapologetic brilliance, bathing the manicured lawns and marble terraces in golden light. But inside the grand study on the second floor, the atmosphere was dark, heavy, and charged with impending conflict. Gabriel sat behind his massive mahogany desk, his black suit immaculate, the silver signet ring shining on his right hand. Standing before him was Marco, his chief enforcer, holding a leather-bound folio containing intercepted intelligence reports. "The word is out on the streets, Boss," Marco reported, his voice grim as he laid several printed photographs onto the desk. "The surviving capos from Bellini’s crew aren't happy about Vanessa being thrown out on her ear. They think you've gone soft over a maid and a kid. They're meeting at the old slaughterhouse on the south side tonight to discuss a leadership challenge." Gabriel picked up one of the photographs, showing three rival capos standing outside a rusted industrial warehouse. His jaw tightened, the light stubble along his jawline casting sharp shadows under the desk lamp. "They think a momentary distraction means vulnerability," Gabriel growled, tossing the photograph back onto the mahogany wood. "They forgot who built the North Docking lanes with his bare hands." "Shall I mobilize the strike teams?" Marco asked, resting his hand casually near the holster beneath his jacket. "Shall we clean house before the sun sets?" "No," Gabriel said, standing up to his full height, his broad shoulders filling the room. "I’ll go alone. Let them think they have an advantage. Let them crawl out of their holes so I can crush them all in one fell swoop." The heavy oak door of the study clicked open, and Rachel stepped inside, wearing a simple cream blouse and dark trousers, holding Lily by the hand. Lily was wearing her pale yellow lace dress, holding her worn teddy bear. Gabriel’s lethal expression melted away instantly as he looked down at the child. "Are you going somewhere, Gabriel?" Rachel asked, her brown eyes narrowing slightly as she took in the tactical combat knife strapped to his belt and the subtle bulge of his concealed firearm. "Just taking care of some minor housekeeping," Gabriel lied smoothly, flashing a reassuring smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. "You and Lily stay inside the perimeter gates today. Bruno has strict orders not to let anyone in or out." Rachel crossed her arms, stepping closer to the desk. "You're going after Vanessa’s family, aren't you? You're going to start a syndicate war." "I'm ending a war that started five years ago," Gabriel corrected, his voice firm and unyielding. He stepped past her, pausing at the doorway to look down at Lily. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the white carnation she had given him the night before, its petals slightly bruised but still fragrant. He tucked it carefully behind Lily’s ear. "Be a good girl for your mother, sweetheart. Daddy has to go fix some broken things." Lily giggled, patting his cheek with her small hand. "Okay, Daddy. Bring me back a lollipop!" Gabriel’s breath hitched. Daddy. The word echoed in his chest like a benediction. He looked at Rachel, his dark eyes heavy with an unspoken, desperate promise. "I'll be back," he whispered. "I swear to you."
