Chapter 11

The black SUV tore through the rain-slicked streets of Chicago, the city lights bleeding into streaks of neon against the dark glass. Inside, Gabriel gripped the steering wheel, his knuckles white, the silver signet ring digging into his skin. His breath was shallow, his heart hammering a frantic rhythm against his ribs. He had left the slaughterhouse a graveyard of ambition, but the cold reality of the syndicate world was already clawing at the edges of his mind. He had won the battle, but the war was far from over.

Back at the estate, the grand study felt suffocatingly quiet. Rachel paced the length of the Persian rug, her sensible shoes silent against the thick wool. Lily was asleep on the leather sofa, curled tightly around her worn teddy bear. Rachel couldn't shake the terrifying image of Gabriel walking into a den of wolves alone.

When the heavy oak doors finally clicked open, Rachel spun around. Gabriel stood in the doorway, soaked to the bone, his tailored black suit plastered to his massive frame, rain dripping from his dark hair. He looked exhausted, brutal, and entirely unbroken.

"You're bleeding," Rachel said, her voice dropping to a whisper as she noticed a dark stain spreading across the white collar of his shirt.

Gabriel looked down, barely registering the shallow graze along his shoulder. "It’s nothing. A scratch."

Rachel crossed the room, her protective instincts overriding her apprehension. She reached out, her fingers gently touching the damp fabric of his suit. "Sit down. Let me look at it."

Gabriel obeyed, sinking into the leather armchair behind his desk, watching her with a quiet, intense focus. As Rachel carefully unbuttoned his collar, the scent of rain, copper, and adrenaline filled the small space between them.

"Did you finish it?" Rachel asked, her brown eyes meeting his slate-gray gaze.

"I sent a message," Gabriel replied softly, his hand rising to cover hers against his chest. "Vanessa’s family won't touch you. They won't touch Lily."

May you like

"And what about you?" Rachel whispered, the fear she had tried so hard to suppress finally breaking through. "What happens when they decide a message isn't enough?"

Gabriel’s fingers tightened around hers. "Then they will learn why Daniel trusted me to protect his family. Because I don't negotiate. I destroy."
