Chapter 1

The crystal chandeliers of the Moretti estate hummed with the quiet, suffocating pressure of an elite gathering, casting liquid gold across the polished marble floors. White floral arrangements rose like sculpted clouds between gold-trimmed chairs, where wealthy dinner guests watched the unfolding scene in hushed, nervous anticipation. It was a room built on power, fear, and absolute control. Standing near the grand arched doorway, Rachel Hayes felt the cold marble beneath her sensible black shoes, her fingers tightly holding the small, warm hand of her five-year-old daughter, Lily. Rachel wore her standard housekeeping uniform—a black dress with a crisp white collar, white cuffs, and a delicate white lace apron—her brown hair pinned back in a loose, practical bun. Beside her, Lily was a stark, innocent contrast in a pale yellow lace dress and tiny gold shoes, clutching a single white carnation against her chest with both hands. Her long light brown curls framed a face of wide, trusting eyes. Across the room, amidst the sea of wealth, Gabriel Moretti approached. At thirty-four, the undisputed mafia boss was a commanding monument of danger, clad in a tailored black suit, black shirt, and black tie, with dark wavy hair, light stubble, and visible ink tattoos snaking up his neck and across his calloused hands. A silver wristwatch caught the chandelier light as he moved with predatory grace. Beside him stood Vanessa Bellini, his fiancée, radiant in a fitted red silk evening gown that clung to her curves, a diamond necklace flashing at her throat as she raised a crystal champagne glass to her lips. Vanessa’s blue eyes narrowed as she spotted the maid and the child standing by the entrance, her expression twisting into immediate disgust. She tossed her head back, gesturing sharply toward the massive doorway with her free hand. "Take your daughter and leave," Vanessa snapped, her voice cutting through the gentle murmurs of the dining room like shattered glass. Rachel blinked, her heart hammering against her ribs, but before she could pull Lily backward into the hallway, the little girl broke free of her gentle grip and stepped forward into the golden light. Lily held the white carnation flat against her pale yellow dress, tilting her small head back to look up into the towering, menacing face of the most feared man in the syndicate. "Daddy said you were his best friend," Lily announced, her sweet, high-pitched voice carrying effortlessly across the silent, breathless room.
