Chapter 13

Over the next two weeks, the library became a war room. Rachel spent hours pouring over ledgers and financial reports, learning the intricate, shadow-laced world of syndicate logistics. Gabriel was a patient teacher, his deep voice guiding her through the complexities of shipping manifests and offshore accounts.
One evening, as the rain lashed against the windows, Rachel was struggling to reconcile a discrepancy in the docking fees. She rubbed her temples, exhaustion settling deep in her bones.
Gabriel walked into the library, carrying two cups of dark espresso. He set one down in front of her. "You need a break."
Rachel sighed, leaning back in her chair. "I need to understand where this three million dollars went."
Gabriel leaned over the table, his arm brushing against hers as he pointed to a line item. "It went to a shell company in Panama. It’s how we wash the import tariffs."
Rachel looked at him, shaking her head slightly. "You make it sound so simple. Stealing millions of dollars."
"It is simple," Gabriel murmured, his gaze shifting from the ledger to her face. "The hard part is keeping it."
The proximity between them was suddenly suffocating. Rachel could feel the heat radiating from his large frame, the subtle, magnetic pull that had been growing steadily since the night he gave her the music box.
Gabriel reached out, his calloused fingers gently brushing a stray lock of brown hair from her forehead. "You don't belong in this room, Rachel. You don't belong in this world."
"I belong wherever my daughter is safe," Rachel replied, her voice trembling slightly. "And right now, this is the only place she’s safe."

"Is that the only reason you're staying?" Gabriel asked, his dark eyes searching hers, searching for the crack in her formidable armor.
Rachel didn't answer. She couldn't. The truth was too terrifying, too complicated, tangled in loyalty to a dead husband and a forbidden attraction to a dangerous king. She simply closed her eyes as Gabriel leaned in, his lips brushing against her forehead in a silent, heartbreaking promise.
